About Dr Freddie
I am an experienced teacher of Latin language and literature and have a PhD in Classics and Ancient History from the University of Exeter. For three years I taught first and second-year undergraduates across a broad range of academic subjects covering Classical literature, ancient history, and material culture and civilisation, resulting in almost 300 hours of teaching and marking experience. I have a deep passion for all the subjects that I am offering to teach. I am currently teaching some 20 students, either via one-to-one tuition or in small groups, in both Latin and Spanish language, from beginners’ to post-university level. I have particular experience in tutoring students for Iseb Common Entrance exams and GCSE (both OCR and Eduqas).
I can teach the following:
Latin language (all levels from beginners’ onwards)
Greco-Roman history (specialism Augustan principate)
Greek and Latin literature (poetry and prose, all genres, specialism poetry of the Augustan period, Homer)
Roman society and material culture
While at Exeter University, I taught a broad range of subjects covering literature, history and material culture to first and second-year undergraduates and am happy to cover these areas. Specific subjects include Latin language, ancient epic poetry, Greek and Roman drama, Roman laughter (covering a broad range of texts). I marked and graded essays for all of my literature modules, as well as for additional modules covering Women in Homer and the Age of Augustus. I normally worked with small groups of between 5-10 students which gave me the opportunity to understand each of my students’ learning strengths and challenges, tailoring my classes to their requirements. I also undertook extensive formal assessment of essays and commentaries for the department, offering students detailed feedback on the quality of their work. My experience as an editor and journalist has provided me with a unique insight into what makes a good piece of writing and so I have also tutored undergraduate students, both in small groups and on a one-on-one basis, in how to structure their academic essays and improve their writing skills.
I am above all a thoughtful teacher, emphasising kindness and respect above all other qualities, who will work hard to make sure I can help my students as much as possible. I also have undertaken extensive formal teacher training through a University of Exeter official programme and am now an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (please see below for more details). In a written assessment of my teaching at Exeter, my reviewer said, “There wasn’t a single moment in which [the students] weren’t completely focused on the task at hand… It’s a clear marker of how comfortable they felt that almost every student participated in the discussion. You took great care to give the students space, holding back at certain points to avoid disrupting their flow, which was really nice to see.”

Lessons will be an hour in length, with a strong focus on grammar and detailed language work. My aim is to provide the student with a secure foundational knowledge of the core grammatical concepts, vocabulary, and broader syntax that will enable them to reach (in time) an advanced level of Latin learning. I also look to demistify and clarify the complex grammatical language that is traditionally associated with Latin learning, while also providing the student with practical advice on how to translate Latin accurately. The first lesson will be used to learn more about the student, what they hope to gain from the lessons, how I can help them, as well as determining the type of material that I will then cover so that I can tailor subsequent lessons to the student’s needs and requirements. This could be centred on specific subject areas or topics required for the student to pass a formal exam, whether Common Entrance, GCSE, A-level or undergraduate, or it could be a comprehensive course of study designed to enable students to learn Latin with no previous knowledge of the language. Any students who are taught by me will automatically be given expert advice on how to structure and compose their written work in English, based on my many years of professional experience in this field as an editor and journalist.

Perfect! Freddie was very patient and very well prepared for my daughter’s first lesson, she was very happy with the class. Highly recommend.
- I really enjoyed teaching Roni's daughter. She was attentive, polite and wanting to learn at all times. While starting out in Latin, I was impressed by her grasp of the grammar that she had been taught. She is well placed to extend her knowledge of the language further.Dr Freddie's response :

Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I approached Freddie for help with Spanish language tuition. He took the time to understand the elements that I found challenging and was able to explain things in different ways to help me to better understand and overcome obstacles to my learning. His manner was always friendly and good-humoured while also remaining professional. I would not hesitate to recommend him to others who need a little extra help.
I worked with Freddie as a Postgraduate Teaching Associate for two years, and have heard only positive feedback about him from our shared students! He is a kind and patient teacher who genuinely wants the best for his students. He has a real talent for explaining complex ideas in a clear manner and ensuring the understanding of his audience. His wealth of knowledge and passion for his subject make him an excellent educator.
Having previously worked with Freddie on a number of academic projects, I can say that he possesses an impressive breath of knowledge concerning the field of Classics (and the humanities in general), and is a highly effective communicator of such knowledge. In addition to those traits, he has always been a professional, efficient, and compassionate individual to work with—skills that naturally go hand-in-hand with such expertise to be dynamic and capable educator. I would, therefore, highly recommend Freddie to anyone seeking to learn more about any aspect of the ancient world as I am confident that they will also have a positive experience and gain a newfound understanding of whatever topic they seek to know more about. - Dr Ryan Denson (University of Silesia in Katowice)
Freddie is a wonderful educator whom I had the privilege of working alongside at the University of Exeter. During this time, his dedication to teaching and the satisfaction of his students was inspiring. His knowledge of Classics and the Latin language is second to none, driven by a passion for Latin poetry and its context. I would recommend Freddie to any prospective student at any level, as he leads with a student-first, considerate approach, and masterful knowledge of the subject.
Freddie is an excellent tutor. He is committed to student learning and takes care to pitch learning at an appropriate level, stretching and challenging students whilst also providing a supportive learning environment. He is deeply knowledgeable about his subjects and as a result is able to pivot mid-session as needed.
He is highly organised, conscientious, and kind; all of which makes him excellent to work with. He has extensive experience working with students of different abilities and at different levels.View more recommendations
