About Teddy

I am Teddy Jennings, a Retained Lecturer in Classical Philosophy at Magdalen College, University of Oxford, and am in the final stages of completing a DPhil (= PhD) in Philosophy, with a research focus on Plato and Aristotle.

I have five years of experience teaching undergraduates across a number of Oxford colleges, delivering tutorials across a wide range of Classics and Philosophy courses. My teaching is rooted in enthusiasm for the ancient world combined with a commitment to clear, structured, and supportive instruction. I take pride in helping students build confidence in grammar and syntax before progressing to original texts, ensuring that even complex literature feels accessible and rewarding rather than daunting.

About the class

I bring extended experience in giving tutorials to Oxford undergraduates and seek as far as is possible to replicate this environment in lessons, while tailoring each lesson to the individual goals, pace and learning style.

My approach revolves firstly around building solid foundations in the Latin and Greek languages, with frequent reviews of the fundamentals of grammar and syntax. These foundations provide students with the confidence to tackle literature in the original language without being daunted, and allow them to engage fully with the texts and ideas with greater ease and enjoyment.

Each lesson usually lasts 60 minutes, though I am happy to offer shorter or longer sessions depending on your needs. Lessons are usually online, though I can make arrangements depending on location.

I hold a First-Class MA in Literae Humaniores (Oxford's term for Classics), as well as a BPhil (= research master's) and DPhil (= PhD) in Philosophy. I have been a tutor in Classics and Philosophy since 2021 and am currently a Retained Lecturer in Classical Philosophy at Magdalen College, Oxford. I have taught extensively during this time across a wide range of subjects, including Greek language, Homer, Plato, Aristotle, and Classical philosophy at both introductory and advanced levels.

My lessons are suitable for all students from GCSE upwards, including A-Levels, IB and undergraduates. I also welcome the opportunity to help any mature learners coming to Latin, Greek, Classics or Philosophy later in life.
