About Octavia
I have studied Latin for almost ten years and achieved a grade 8 at GCSE and an A* at A-Level in Classical Civilisation. I was fortunate to be taught by an outstanding Classics teacher, whose methods strongly inform my own tutoring. My approach focuses on spaced repetition to support long-term retention, alongside close, collaborative literary analysis that helps students develop confidence in their own ideas and written arguments.
I studied Classics at Durham University, where I was awarded a first class mark overall, and for my dissertation on Latin poetry. I have experience tutoring at GCSE level, as well as teaching at KS1, which has strengthened my ability to explain complex ideas clearly and adapt to different learning styles.
While my primary tutoring focus is Latin, I also tutor Classical Civilisation and have sufficient Greek from my degree to support students up to GCSE level. Please feel free to get in touch to discuss your child’s needs or to arrange an initial conversation.

The first session is used to establish where your child needs support. Subsequent sessions allow me to understand your child’s learning style, enabling a structured and methodical approach to the curriculum. How long we spend on a particular topic depends entirely on your child’s confidence and understanding, and I prefer not to move on until something feels solid. I like to integrate in passing things we have learned in previous sessions in order to build long-term memory and sophisticated connections between seemingly unrelated pieces of information. In terms of lesson times, we can do full sessions (60 mins) or split sessions (30 mins twice a week instead of one 60 min session), and I am always available outside of lessons to have a text or phone call to help with homework etc. Overall I think children work best when they are relaxed and I will always strive to make my lessons welcoming and non-judgemental.
