About Louis

My name is Louis, and I am a third-year International Relations and Chinese student at the University of St Andrews, currently studying advanced Mandarin.

I am organised, patient, and highly motivated, with a strong academic record and a clear, supportive teaching style.

Having studied Mandarin in China and Scotland, I understand the challenges learners face at different stages and adapt my approach accordingly. I take my responsibilities seriously and aim to create a friendly, reliable, and professional learning environment where students feel confident progressing at their own pace.

About the class

I teach Mandarin Chinese using a flexible approach tailored to each student’s goals. Lessons typically last 60 minutes and combine speaking, listening, reading, and grammar, with a strong focus on practical communication and confidence.

As an International Relations and Chinese student in St Andrews, I understand both exam requirements and real-world language use. I use clear explanations, repetition, and active practice rather than rote memorisation. My lessons are suitable for beginners, GCSE/A-level students, and university learners, as well as adults looking to improve conversational or professional Mandarin.

As Louis' former classmate while studying Mandarin together, I have never met an individual as motivated, passionate, and hardworking as he is. He is willing to give his utmost, resulting in a very strong Mandarin level. From my personal experience, he would be an excellent tutor, very capable in explaining and teaching things in a clear and engaging manner.

Louis is an excellent tutor and his lessons are well-suited for beginner and intermediate learners of Mandarin. His explanations are easy to follow and understand, and is happy to go over things that are grammar points and sentence structures that are more difficult. I am happy to recommend him as he easily connects with students and makes them feel at ease.
