About Francesca

I am a graduate of Oriel College (University of Oxford) in BA Literae Humaniores (Classics). Within my degree, I specialised heavily in the early Greek world and Homeric literature, with a particular interest in ancient Sparta. I also worked on Late Republican and Early Imperial Rome, particularly the politics of Cicero and the campaigns of Julius and Octavian Caesar.

I have since studied an MSc in Security Studies at University College London, and am planning on returning to Classics for further Postgraduate study in Iron Age Sparta.

During my Undergraduate studies, I began tutoring ad-hoc (gaining over 100 hours of experience) while also producing free resources for students who might otherwise never have the opportunity to get interested in Classics and the possibility of studying it at University.

I enjoy fostering curiosity in my students that extends beyond just their syllabus, and tend to employ a very mixed-methods approach to Classics, encouraging the study of archaeology and material culture alongside the literary record to improve our understanding of history.

I usually teach to a timeframe of an hour; admissions sessions tend to run shorter than this. In either case, I am always happy to adapt lesson length, structure, and content to the wants and needs of my students.

In a first session, I'll take stock of where the student is at in this subject/with their university application, and then discuss what their goal is and the time period within which they wish to achieve it.
In a general lesson following the introduction, there will be a brief period to go over any homework that might have been set, a review of content and approaches (I am a particular advocate for the use of archaeology in historical argument), and frequent knowledge checks against (adapted) practice questions. Closer to exam periods, there will be ample opportunity for practice tests and exam technique feedback.

For Oxbridge Admissions, I am able to provide mock interviews in addition to written work and personal statement preparation.
