  • Ashtanga yoga: a rigorous, physically demanding style based on a fixed series of postures and breathing techniques.
  • Iyengar yoga: known for its strict focus on correct body alignment, making it ideal for those recovering from injuries.
  • Kundalini yoga: a spiritual and energetic practice combining postures, chanting, and breathwork — suited to those exploring yoga's meditative dimension.
  • Restorative yoga: a slow, therapeutic practice focused on deep rest and mental calm, using bolsters and blankets for support.

Working with a private yoga instructor means you explore these styles safely and progress at your own pace.

Planning to Become a Yoga Teacher in Thane?

Yoga is one of the six fundamental philosophical subjects of Hinduism. It is a union of physical, mental and spiritual practices. Over the past few decades, yoga has revived its importance among people. Many have confessed that they want to make yoga their career and want to study it. We have penned down a few important points on the history of yoga and how you can be a yoga teacher in Thane.

History of Yoga in India

The history of yoga touched a lot of uncertainties and ambiguity due to the lack of evidence in the earliest stages when the teachings were secretive. Texts on yoga were written on palm leaves which got destroyed easily. We can trace back yoga's history to 5000 years back, but many researchers believe it is 10000 years old. Yoga's history can be divided into four periods of development and practice.

Pre-classical Yoga

Yoga was developed by the Indus- Saraswati civilization almost 5000 years ago. Rig Veda, the oldest Indian text, mentions yoga for the first time. Yoga was defined and developed by Brahmins and Rishis, who formulated a detailed report on it, their practices, and beliefs in the Upanishads.

The most decorated of yogic scriptures is the Bhagavad Gita, created around 500 B.C.E. The Upanishads talk about karma yoga (sacrifice of the ego through action and self-knowledge) and jnana yoga.

Classical Yoga

In the pre-classical period, yoga was a mix of various beliefs and techniques, often contradicting each other, which created a lot of confusion. Patanjali's Yoga Sutras define the first systematic presentation of yoga, the highlight of the classical period. This text was composed in the 2nd century and described the method of Raja Yoga or Classical Yoga. Patanjali is often regarded as the Father of Yoga.

Patanjali constructed the practice of yoga as an "eight-limbed path," which shows the steps and stages to obtain Samadhi(enlightenment), and these sutras influence modern yoga.

Post-Classical Yoga

The post-classical period comes a few centuries after Patanjali's age. Yoga masters designed a system of practices aimed to refresh the body and sustain life. They put forward the belief that the proper way to reach enlightenment is through the physical body. They denied the teachings of ancient Vedas and developed Tantra Yoga with new unorthodox techniques to purify the body and mind and free it from worldly worries. This led to Hatha Yoga which is prevalent in the West.

Modern Yoga

In 1893, Swami Vivekanand mesmerized his audience in Chicago with his views on yoga.

After that, many yoga masters travelled to the West and motivated people. In the 1920s and 1930s, Hatha Yoga was highly promoted in India. In 1924, T. Krishnamacharya founded the first school of Hatha Yoga in Mysore, and in 1936, Sivananda opened the Divine Life Society. Sivananda wrote over 200 books on yoga and founded nine ashrams and numerous yoga centres all over the world. Indra Devi opened her yoga studio in Hollywood in 1947. After this, Hatha Yoga has widened its base worldwide and continues to influence millions of people.
