About Desta
Desta Haile is a British-Eritrean educator, musician, and writer, born in Bangkok. With over twenty years of experience in teaching languages, intercultural communication, and theatre, she has always been drawn to the intersection of education and the arts. Her passion for both led her to intern at The Theatre of the Oppressed with Augusto Boal in Rio de Janeiro, an experience that has continued to shape her work.
Desta has worked as a backing vocalist for a diverse range of artists, including Joe Bataan, Zap Mama, Baloji, Myléne Farmer, Hadise, Finley Quaye, and Filho do Zua, performing across the world. She has also performed as a lead vocalist and bassist, taking her own music far and wide from stages in Tanzania, Croatia and the Royal Albert Hall. She was commissioned by UNESCO to compose the song “Green Citizens” and represented Eritrea in Universal Music’s Earth Orchestra Project.
Languages through Music (LTM) was a natural progression of Desta’s international experience in both education and music. The project combines her interest in languages with her belief in the power of music to create engaging, culturally immersive learning experiences.
During the 2020 lockdown, Desta turned more towards writing, with a growing interest in uncovering hidden histories. She has won a couple of short story prizes, including the Babel Festival of Literature and Translation’s “To Speak Europe in Different Languages” award in Switzerland and the Afritondo 2021 short story prize. She was also a Runner-Up in the Global Black Women’s Non-Fiction Manuscript Prize, chaired by Bernardine Evaristo, with her debut book set for release in 2026 with Cassava Republic Press.
Desta loves traveling- she has lived in ten countries, and has visited eighty more. Her upcoming trips include St. Bart's because she has been booked to share her Languages through Music work with the St. B'Art Book and Jazz Festival.
