Teaching martial arts has been my passion for the majority of my life. It is so rewarding to see the students making the life skills we teach a part of who they are. Hearing from the teachers and parents of these students about the positive impact martial arts training has made for them is what it is all about. Martial arts training sets children up for a lifetime of success.
Sensei Steve Wagner is the Chief Instructor of Kimber Martial Arts. He has 15 years of experience in teaching martial arts classes. He holds a 5th Degree Black Belt in American Karate as well as a 4th Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. In addition, Sensei Steve has 5 years experience as a Certified Personal Trainer.

We will always start new students with a one on one lesson with the Chief Instructor before introducing them to the group class. This serves two purposes. One, it allows the instructor to evaluate the student and make a personalized recommendation for the program that is going to set the student up for success. Two, it allows the student to feel comfortable and confident in trying a new activity. It can be scary trying new things for the first time so we strive to build the students confidence from day one.
We have worked with students of all ages and ability levels from 3 to 73. You are never too old to learn martial arts. This type of training has benefits for everyone. We have helped students who struggle with ADHD, Autism, Aspergers, and Spectrum disorder. We have helped students to overcome bullying and to develop the inner strength to prevent it. We give students the tools to succeed in life.
I would advise parents looking for martial arts training for their children to shop around. Most people assume that all martial arts schools are the same. This is far from the case. Try to find an instructor who will act as your partner in setting your child up for success and not just as a drill sergeant. If it is not perfectly clear what life lesson is being taught through the physical activities done in class then you may be in the wrong place.
I had a 7 year old student come in who was on the verge of being kicked out of school. He was having problems with self control and was getting in to trouble for acting out in class and being physical with other students. Since he started karate classes, he has no longer had those problems. He has become inspired to solve problems without violence and he is now a model student and leader in classes. Examples like him are exactly why we do what we do.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would recommend thinking of what specifically you are looking to accomplish through a martial arts program. If you don't know what goal you want to achieve, then it is very challenging for the instructor to show you how to make it happen. If you begin with the end in mind that you are looking for, it makes it much more likely that you will make that goal a reality.
