About Ole

Hi, I’m Ole ('Ollie'), and I offer 1:1 essay coaching at senior secondary and university levels.

I hold a PhD in Philosophy and have a decade's experience as a researcher, lecturer, and tutor at university level, where (among other things) I marked hundreds of undergraduate and honours level essays. I'm currently a manager in the Victorian Public Service, where clarity of thought and precise communication is essential.

In addition to my background in academia and public service, I'm also an immigrant whose first language is not English. When I began studying in English I had to use the dictionary constantly, but I worked my way up to publishing a peer-reviewed academic book and a number of peer-reviewed articles in top journals. Everyone's journey is different, but if you're a person that aspires to excellence in a second language, I hear you, and I can help.

About the class

Moving ideas and paragraphs around can be frustrating, but structure is where clarity is born. When you structure your writing, you structure your thought. That's the work, so that's where we'll focus.

Almost no one produces a clearly structured essay on the first attempt, but I can help you improve your writing through a structured, iterative process.

You'll be asked to send draft work ahead of time. During the lesson, we’ll clarify what you’re trying to argue and how effectively your writing supports that argument. We’ll examine strengths and weaknesses, surface any hidden assumptions, and rebuild your essay into a clearer, more persuasive piece of writing.

Review

All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by the students of Ole.

Perfect! I can't recommend Dr. Ole highly enough! From the very beginning, he went above and beyond to support me. He even offered me free lessons, which showed how genuinely invested he was in helping me succeed.

He carefully reviewed my paper, provided insightful and detailed feedback and helped me draft a professional email to my unit convenor. His guidance made a huge difference and as a result, I was awarded a High Distinction (HD)!

What really sets him apart is the amount of effort he puts into every student. His emails are incredibly detailed, thoughtful, and tailored to your individual situation. He takes the time to explain everything clearly and genuinely cares about helping his students achieve the best possible outcomes.

I am incredibly grateful for all of his support and would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, dedicated, and genuinely caring tutor. Thank you so much for everything!

I enrolled in a philosophy course on Locke and Hume at ANU in the late 2000s and Ole was my lecturer/tutor. That was the best class of my undergraduate degree and is the course that made me fall in love with philosophy. Ole's classes were always super clear and interesting. As a teacher, he was approachable, friendly and very encouraging. His feedback was always insightful. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Ole!

Ole is an excellent instructor, who can deliver complex ideas in a clear and palatable way. (He taught me the word " palatable" so you should expect to have a much bigger vocabulary after getting a few lessons from him). He is patient, empathetic and uses the tutoring time very constructively.
