You don't know why you get good grades at school but can't understand a native English speaker when they ask how you are? And, while we're at it, you still think the right way to respond to 'you alright, mate?' is to say 'I am fine, thank you, and you'? Firstly, it's not your fault. Secondly, I can help. And no, I'm not gonna tell you there's a magic trick or a new method that has just been discovered. There are no tricks when it comes to learning a language. You can't learn it in your sleep and you can't learn it over the weekend. Sorry to break it to you. Learning the language will always require a lot of work and time. But it can be fun. It can be engaging and it can be effective. There are no tricks but there are tools and I can help you find the right ones. Do you ever wonder why some people sound fluent after only a year of learning the language while others can barely utter a word? No, it has nothing to do with genes :) Three main factors ensure effective learning. Motivation - I can't teach you if you don't want to learn Right method - learning doesn't have to be hard Structure - so you don't waste your time Let's quickly look at the numbers; the FSI study indicates that it takes 480 hours to reach basic fluency in group 1 languages. Whoah, that's a lot of time. A lot of lessons. You better start that intense language course your friend told you about. It works miracles. Oh wait, it doesn't. Most of the language courses are generic. They have a syllabus to follow and a method they assume will work for everyone. The problem is that people are different. One method may work wonders for a visual learner but not for a kinesthetic one. When you're in a group class what can your teacher do about it? Nothing. S / he can't do much to accommodate different needs, s / he has limited time, lesson plan to get through and homework to assign. How do I know it? I taught in a language school.
