About Yan
About me
Hi! My name is Yan. I’m a Mandarin Chinese tutor who connects language with logic and culture.
I was born and raised in Kaifeng, an ancient capital repeatedly buried and reborn by the Yellow River. Here, you dig downward to find dynasties, and drive an hour to find Shaolin kung fu. Fun fact: my hometown had the world’s first food delivery, fire patrol, and even neon lights over a thousand years ago!
I also just earned my Master’s degree in Data Science with an impressive GPA. That might sound unrelated, but it trained me to break down complex systems—like Mandarin grammar or Chinese characters—into clear, learnable steps. I understand how to build a foundation logically, which makes learning Chinese feel structured and achievable.
I absolutely love traveling and have been to Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Germany, Poland, UAE, Australia, and Indonesia. This helps me explain Chinese culture in ways that resonate with learners from different backgrounds. Plus, I scored 7.0 on IELTS, so I can teach comfortably in English when you need it.
I’ve been tutoring since my college years, mainly helping Chinese high school students prepare for English exams. Now, I focus on teaching Mandarin to beginners and intermediate and advanced learners, especially those who want to speak confidently in real-life situations.

I had tutored students in English at a Chinese educational institution, primarily serving high school students preparing for the college entrance exam (Gaokao), as I achieved a near-perfect score in English during my own Gaokao.
Also, I have been teaching Mandarin to foreigners for 3 months. I employ a practical and interactive teaching approach to make learning enjoyable, covering speaking, listening, reading, and cultural knowledge.
