About Joy
I hold two master's degrees -- one in applied mathematics, one in physics. I started teaching math in 1996. While many of the intervening years saw me as a part-time adjunct instructor of mathematics, I did enjoy a full-time appointment to the math faculty of Alabama A&M University for 5 of those years.
I have also used my skills in industry and government, most notably at NASA and Intergraph.
I also have a depth and breadth of experience that helps me help you figure many of the WHY's of the math you are tasked to learn, and I know the really salient points that you need to hang onto as you progress.

I've taught just about every undergraduate math course and tutored some graduate ones, too. After my graduate teaching assistantship, I started out teaching introductory statistics and probability for several semesters at Oakwood College. I have also taught at UAH, Strayer, Randolph School, and Calhoun. I am familiar with the undergrad curriculum.
I've tutored students from schools all over the world -- high school and college. I have tutored students from pre-algebra to differential equations (and in an assortment of "off-road" courses like business calculus, statistics, discrete math, graduate psychology statistics, real analysis, etc.). Some students have followed me through their entire undergraduate career: trigonometry, calculus 1-2-3, differential equations, and linear algebra. High school students, too, have stayed with me from pre-algebra through two algebras and geometry into pre-calculus or even calculus. I foster loyalty by making the student a priority.

Joy was my tutor for all of Calculus 3. She was the best tutor I could have possibly asked for. She goes through questions very slowly and will explain concepts if needed. She would always make time for me and she actually cares about how well I do. If it wasn't for her, I would not have survived Calc 3. It is pretty ironic that her name is Joy because she is genuinely a joy to work with. I cannot recommend her enough!
I have been meeting with Joy weekly for the past three semesters, where she helped me through calc II and III, and differential equations (calc IV) where my lessons with her have made me feel so much more confident about the class material and exams. She is great at slowing down and explaining tough concepts that my in-class professors did not explain well.
As a parent, I am very grateful that Joy has been a tutor for my son. She has had a positive impact on his perceptions of math as well as a substantial positive influence on the outcomes in the course he just completed.
My son reports that Joy has an exceptional understanding of advanced mathematics, particularly multivariable calculus. She is able to explain difficult material in a way that builds both understanding and confidence. Her ability to identify specific areas where improvement was needed and then focus instruction in a very effective and encouraging way was repeatedly mentioned by my son.
I think it is important to note that the tutoring experience with Joy was influential enough that my son is considering changing majors from economics to mathematical economics. I think this is the greatest evidence of the quality of her instruction and mentorship.
My son plans to continue working with Joy next term for probability and statistics coursework.
I would strongly recommend Joy to any student (or parent seeking to find a way to be supportive of a student) that is taking quantitative and statistical courses.View more recommendations
