About Michelle

I provide premium, start-to-finish academic writing support exclusively for university and graduate-level students.

I am a practicing California attorney, a graduate of UBC’s Honours English Language and Literatures program, and a former teaching assistant for undergraduate literature courses. I received UBC’s Trek Excellence Scholarship for ranking within the top 5 percent of my class and graduated with an undergraduate GPA equivalent to 3.96 on the LSAC scale.

I bring more than 2,000 hours of tutoring experience and have worked with students ranging from first-year undergraduates to master’s and doctoral candidates. I have received 25 reviews through Superprof.

To date, every English essay I have guided through my complete coaching and editing process has earned an A-range grade. This is a record of past student outcomes, not a guarantee of a future professor’s decision.

My service is designed for students who want far more than proofreading. I help students develop the argument, analysis, structure, and clarity expected in strong university writing.

I regularly assist with:

• Literary analysis and close reading
• Research essays and term papers
• History, humanities, and social-science papers
• Thesis and argument development
• Source selection, synthesis, and integration
• Research proposals and literature reviews
• Graduate-level papers
• Thesis and dissertation chapters
• Personal statements and graduate-school applications
• Major revisions following professor or supervisor feedback

Many students understand their course material but do not know how to convert that knowledge into an original, persuasive argument. Others receive comments such as “too descriptive,” “unclear thesis,” “needs more analysis,” or “poor organization” without being shown how to correct the underlying problem.

I make those expectations concrete.

My full academic-writing process may include:

• Interpreting the assignment prompt and grading rubric
• Identifying the central intellectual problem
• Developing and testing possible thesis statements
• Planning research and identifying evidentiary gaps
• Building a source-synthesis matrix
• Developing a student-authored outline
• Live drafting and analytical-development sessions
• Developmental editing for argument and organization
• Line editing for clarity, concision, and style
• Citation and formatting review
• A final paragraph-by-paragraph rubric audit
• A post-assignment review to apply instructor feedback to future work

My feedback is direct, detailed, and highly personalized. I do not merely tell students that a paragraph is weak. I explain what the paragraph is trying to accomplish, why it is not yet persuasive, and what intellectual work remains necessary.

Before our first meeting, students should send:

• The complete assignment prompt
• The grading rubric
• The deadline
• The course and academic level
• Required readings or sources
• Any notes, outline, or draft already prepared
• Relevant feedback from previous assignments

The complimentary first meeting is a 15-minute consultation to assess the assignment, timeline, and appropriate level of support. It is not a complimentary editing session.

Fixed-scope essay, research-paper, and thesis packages are available for students who want support throughout the entire process.

  • 1) When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I mainly teach English, history (social studies), and math (up to AP calc). I have loved literature and history since I learned to read (in the first grade?) and my affinity towards math developed while studying proofs in the eighth grade.
  • 2) What makes you passionate about your subject?

Studying literature in university transformed the way I see the world and the principles I live by. In this way, it's not as much of a choice as it is a necessity for me. As for math, I love it because it's fun. Understanding the rules and formulas are just like learning the rules of any other game-once you've mastered a set of rules, the rest becomes play.
  • 3) What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

For humanities subjects, I first got into tutoring while I was doing my BA in literature. I learned that there were certain "truths" about literary criticism that were somehow kept secret in high school, resulting in a very difficult transition to writing in university, limiting the student's ability to adjust to a more critical way of thinking about literature. I was lucky because I received valuable guidance from many teachers and predecessors, but many of my peers in university were in the dark the whole time.

I once heard a university professor say "high school teaches you the what, university teaches you the how, and graduate studies teaches you the why." I've taken it as a personal mission to help fill the gap between the what and the how, since methodology is rarely explicitly taught in school. Years of experience working with primary, secondary school and lower-level university students have proven to me that this gap is very real, and that filling it is very effective.

I started tutoring primary and secondary students in math and other sciences while I was in high school. I find that being an effective maths and science tutor not only requires solid knowledge of the subject matter on my part, but perhaps even more importantly, an ability to identify the gaps in the students understanding of the subject matter (e.g. where and what, in their thought processes, went wrong) and to be able to explain the subject matter clearly. This is something I have focused on, and continue to improve, in my own teaching.
  • 4) Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

Yes, there have been many. I was very lucky to have attended an international school in Beijing, so all of my teachers were just really cool expats from all over the world. My history teacher was a DJ by night and my English teacher was a Hollywood actor (we eventually snooped out his part in How I Met Your Mother and teased him about it in class. He then brought us cookies the next day). I still keep in touch with a lot of them today.

There have also been a few university professors who have profoundly influenced my own thinking and pedagogy.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

Haha, like in school or in life?

Having a good attitude and being diligent and consistent is key to success in school. No matter the level of intelligence, there's simply no way around just doing the work-I've tried.
