• When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

  I started my love for performance at a young age from dance classes and singing in front of family members. This then grew into being introduced to musical theatre at StageCoach Theatre Arts at the age of 8, and later on I realised my love of acting. All I wanted to do was make people feel as much as I did when watching Elphaba in Wicked (minus the singing), or make people laugh as much as Rachel in Friends. I then went on to study Drama for GCSE and A-Level, and was introduced to New Earth Academy where I realised that there could be British East Asian actors on stage and screen. I can fit-in in this industry. My confidence grew and I went on to train at ALRA South on the Full-Time Foundation Course where I believe I grew the most, but I wasn’t done with training and decided to train further on a BA(Hons) in Acting at Drama St Mary’s. I’ve learnt so much from everyone I’ve met and worked with. There have been so many moments that I’ve loved within all my years training and emerging into this industry and it’s only proven that as an actor and human, you’re always able to learn more, grow and get better at your passions.

• Which artists or works affect you the most?

  From my own training, I connect well with Stanislavski and Laban techniques as I think the combination of working on the psychology and physicality of characters stemming from these two practitioners work well for me. I’m interested in the expression of movement in performance - especially on stage - but also love naturalism which can be carried across all mediums of acting.
  Most recently, I’ve been loving watching Bridgerton, Schitts Creek, Peaky Blinders.
  As well as always being a massive fan of Friends, I May Destroy You and Miranda.
  I admire Carey Mulligan, Florence Pugh, Gemma Chan, Kate Winslet, Asa Butterfield, Daisy Edgar-Jones.

• What are the qualities and skills required to succeed in this area?

  It’s not all about talent. That is a misconception. I believe having the right mentality, hard-work, discipline and being business-savvy also allows you to succeed greatly as an actor-performer.
  Trust in the process of learning and training, trust in your own abilities and keep being eager to always know more about the industry.

• What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

  Remember why you chose to love acting in the first place. Remember the joy and freedom in expressing yourself, characters and stories acting allows you to feel. You are where you need to be. Just keep going.

• How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

  It makes me feel warm, brave and confident in myself. Although as actors, we are being other people and characters and telling different stories, each character has an element of ourselves. I enjoy learning and so being about to be anyone at any time is so refreshing and this is what makes me feel like I can do and be anything I want.
  I also love the creative process in any performance. It is not solely down to one person (unless it is a one-person show, all created by that one person) and it is this collaboration and building relationships that I find fulfilling and fun.

• What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

  When I was in Sixth Form I was given the opportunity to produce, direct, cast and put on a 30min play in the annual InterHouse Drama Competition. It was tough, but I learnt from the whole experience and so whatever the outcome was, I was so dearly proud of everyone involved and felt so accomplished by going through all the ups and downs in putting the show on.
  I’m also immensely proud to have worked with director Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu on a production of ‘Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992’. It talked about such difficult subjects on race, assault, protests and anger and the whole process in doing this production was incredible.

• Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

  Yes! All the time. I’m always so proud of my students. Everyone is starting out from different places and I always enjoy watching them blossom and grow.

• Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

  Being organised is key. Then being able to freely and accurately communicate is also essential. However, at the end of the day, teaching people about something I’m passionate about is just such a joy that that propels me forward and to keep teaching and learning from each other.
