Topic: Gas laws Sub topic: Boyle's law Objective: at the end of the lesson students should be able to; ✓ state Boyle's law ✓ illustrate mathematically ✓ perform simple calculation Teaching aid: inflated balloon Step1 Boyle's state that the volume of a given mass of gas is inversely proportional to the pressure at constant temperature. This implies that as the pressure increases, the volume will decrease. For example if you blow air into balloon, the size will increase showing that the volume has increase but at low pressure from your mouth. Step 2 Mathematically from the law volume is inversely proportional to the pressure that is V = k/p PV = K cross multiply For both initial and final conditions therefore, P1V1 = P2V2 P1 = initial pressure in N/m2 or mmHg P2 = final pressure in N/m2 or mmHg V1 = initial volume in cm3 or dm3 V2 = final volume in cm3 or dm3 Step 3 Calculation: 300cm3 of air was pumped in to a car tire at 900 mmHg. Calculate the volume when the pressure is halved. Solution: P1V1 = P2V2 P1 = 900 mmHg V1 = 300 cm3 P2 = halved = 900/2 = 450 mmHg V2=? From the formula, 900 × 300 = 450 × V2 Divide both side by 450 V2 = (900 × 300)/450 V2 = 270000/450 V2 = 600 cm3 This result obeys Boyle's law because as the pressure decreases 900 mmHg to 450mmHg, the volume increased from 300cm3 to 600cm3 respectively.
