About Leeyana
I’m currently a Secondary 3 student with a strong academic background, particularly in Science. While I’ve found success in certain subjects, my journey hasn’t been without its challenges. I’ve struggled to find the right study methods and have experienced performance anxiety, especially when it came to schoolwork. For a long time, I believed that being constantly preoccupied with school was a good thing. However, over time, that mindset turned into an unhealthy obsession with grades. It affected every part of my life — socially, emotionally, and even academically. Eventually, I realized that grades aren't everything, and that there's so much more to life and learning. Ironically, once I adopted this healthier mindset, my performance improved drastically. My average rose from the 70s to the 90s, and I’ve been much more content with my academic journey. That said, I’m always striving to grow — not just in terms of results, but also in how I learn and help others learn. My goal as a tutor is to support others in finding study methods that work for them — just as I had to find mine. I want to help students overcome academic stress, build confidence, and truly understand what they’re learning, not just memorize it. At the same time, I see tutoring as a way to keep improving myself — as a student, mentor, and person.

My Teaching Approach
1. Identifying the Student’s Needs and Challenges
The first and most crucial step in my teaching process is to assess the student's current level and identify any difficulties they may be experiencing in the chosen subject area. This evaluation is key for both the student and me, as it sets the foundation for personalized instruction and helps establish clear goals.
2. Building a Vocabulary Foundation
Once we've identified the student's needs, I begin by introducing and explaining essential vocabulary related to the subject. A strong lexical foundation enables better comprehension and communication. I provide students with a customized vocabulary list, complete with definitions and examples, which they can refer to at any time to reinforce their learning.
3. Teaching the Core Concepts
With the vocabulary in place, we then move on to the subject matter itself. This step may vary depending on the topic and the student's needs.
- For subjects like English grammar, vocabulary practice combined with targeted exercises may be sufficient.
- For more complex subjects like Science, it's important to dive deeper into the concepts. I aim to simplify difficult ideas by making meaningful connections, using analogies, and incorporating visuals to enhance understanding.
4. Practice and Assessment
To ensure comprehension, I provide a range of exercises tailored to the subject and the student's learning style. These may include:
- Problem-solving tasks
- Writing prompts (sentences or short paragraphs)
- Custom quizzes or comprehension questions
This final step helps reinforce the material, identify any lingering confusion, and boost the student’s confidence.
