I take a longview on my students’ education. Yes, there are exams I need to prepare them for, but it’s important to remember that your students will have forgotten most of your class 5 or 10 years down the road unless they go further with the material. That might sound depressing, but I find it rather inspiring. How do I make my teaching sticky? What are the sorts of things that have stuck with me which have proven useful? How can I use my own things-not-forgotten to augment the stickiness of what must be taught?I question boundaries of what I should teach. I noticed issues with my students not asking questions, so I started trying to improve their question asking ability. Is that the purview of the physics teacher? I say it is because it will help them learn physics. I also don’t hesitate to address what’s on students’ minds. My kids are thinking about college so I find ways to help them with that based on the things I’ve learned as a teacher that I’d wished I’d known. Whenever I do this I also do anonymous surveys of my students so they can tell me about anything that was redundant with what they’ve already learned, but so long as it is novel, it’s good for the kids so the fact it doesn’t pertain to physics is irrelevant.I view each individual iteration of my course as a distinct entity with a distinct culture which must be gardened. I share this with my students. I tell them that whether they know it or not, they are a different person in each classroom they inhabit. Who they are changes with the mood of those around them, their own confidence level, their own sense of what they have a right to have an opinion on, and I want them to help build this classroom of students into the time of place they feel good about coming into.My lectures are heavily interactive and question-dominated. I believe in the philosophy that you shouldn’t supply answers to students if you can get them to figure it out themselves, and I have honed my ability to ask questions to the point where I can typically answer their question with a question of my own that will drive them either to the answer or to another question.
My favorite “educational philosopher”, for lack of a better title, is Alfred North Whitehead for his speech The rhythm of education (1922). In particular I love how he breaks down learning into 3 stages: romance, precision, and generalization. I find it remarkably elegant for its nuance and implementability.
I place emphasis on independent work. Teaching the students I do, I am fortunate that they perform well enough that I can focus on “raising ceilings” instead of simply “raising floors”. The best way to raise a ceiling? Recognize that you are the ceiling. You always learn fastest what you truly want to learn, so if you can give students skill so they learn on their own faster, they have the potential to learn more than they would from another lecture from you.
