About Nancy
Teaching saxophone is about creating a balance between structure and freedom—providing students with the tools they need to play confidently while encouraging them to explore, invent, and find their unique voice through music. I focus first on technique, ensuring that each student develops a solid understanding of breath support, embouchure, finger movement, tone production, and articulation. We build habits that support long-term progress, using exercises that strengthen fundamentals without becoming repetitive or disconnected from real music. At the same time, I emphasize expressive playing from the start—phrasing, dynamics, tone color, and personal interpretation are all part of every lesson. Music theory is introduced organically, always tied to what we’re playing. If we’re working on a jazz standard, we analyze its chord structure; if we’re improvising, we explore modes and motifs in real time. I also make space for improvisation in every student’s learning path, whether they’re absolute beginners or more advanced musicians. We start with small steps: playing around with a pentatonic scale, echoing rhythmic ideas, or improvising melodies over a simple groove. As students grow more confident, we dig deeper into harmonic choices and thematic development. Repertoire is never one-size-fits-all. I guide students toward pieces they love and are excited to work on, whether that’s a soulful ballad, a bebop solo, a cinematic arrangement, or a classical étude. My goal is to make lessons as engaging as they are educational. I use backing tracks, looping tools, and recording sessions so students can hear themselves improve and take ownership of their sound. I also help students prepare for real-world opportunities: school concerts, auditions, recitals, jam sessions, or even composing their own music. One of my proudest experiences was coaching a student through their first original composition, helping them arrange and record it from start to finish. The confidence and excitement they gained from that process were transformative. In every case, I aim to cultivate a safe, encouraging, and inspiring space—one where students are free to make mistakes, grow from them, and experience the joy of making music on their own terms.

As a saxophone instructor, my teaching philosophy revolves around fostering both technical excellence and heartfelt musical expression. I believe that mastering the saxophone requires not only disciplined practice but also a sense of personal connection to the music. From our very first lesson, we focus on fundamentals such as tone production, breath control, embouchure development, and finger coordination to ensure a healthy and sustainable playing technique.
I emphasize the importance of listening and ear training, encouraging students to immerse themselves in diverse musical styles ranging from jazz and blues to classical and contemporary genres. Improvisation plays a vital role in my curriculum, where students learn to navigate scales, modes, and chord changes with creativity and confidence. Through call-and-response exercises, play-alongs, and transcription work, students develop their improvisational vocabulary and spontaneity.
I integrate music theory organically to deepen students’ understanding of harmony and structure, helping them become not just performers but well-rounded musicians. Lessons are highly individualized, tailored to each student’s goals, whether that be preparing for auditions, performing in ensembles, or simply enjoying the joy of playing. I also incorporate technology, such as recording devices and practice apps, to enhance self-evaluation and motivation.
Group sessions and ensemble coaching supplement private instruction, providing valuable experience in musical communication and collaboration. I aim to create a supportive, encouraging atmosphere where students feel comfortable to take risks, make mistakes, and grow. One of my most rewarding experiences was guiding a student from beginner level to confidently leading a small jazz combo within a year, watching their technical skills and musical voice flourish simultaneously.
Ultimately, I want every student to not only develop strong saxophone technique but also to find their unique artistic expression and to carry a lifelong passion for music.
