About Jake
Playing guitar has given me countless new experiences, expanded my understanding of music itself and myself as a person (it has also paid well on occasion). I have played live for several bands/artists in all kinds of genres (rock/folk/pop) at all kinds of gigs and events (clubs/theatres/festivals). I have often worked as a musical director for different theatre productions as well as writing/recording original compositions for shows in as varied a range of styles as heavy metal to traditional Chinese classical music. I also ghostwrite for different artists. I view the guitar as a tool to create and express oneself artistically and any virtuosity/theoretical knowledge is merely a means of helping that creativity flow more easily. I was a terrible student; asking too many questions and always needing things to be explained practically. My teaching is therefore very flexible and I greatly encourage students to help me steer the lesson towards the areas of musicianship they are most interested in learning about.

Teaching a range of disciplines learnt from my experience working in different musical contexts and with musicians of all kinds (from recording original classical/folk scores for theatrical pieces to playing live with punk/blues bands) variety is the key to my practice! I will not be able to offer any lessons for grading or syllabus but will teach beginner - intermediate techniques tailored to the individual musician and work towards practical goals (first full song/first gig/upcoming recording session for example). I have structured lessons around specific techniques and topics, but because every student is different, each lesson will also be about discovering how these techniques relate to you as a unique player. Teaching is a dialogue, so hopefully we can all expand our knowledge together (no tangent too extreme)!
