About John

Originally honing my skills on the British jazz scene and holding residencies in restaurants and bars around the country, I then went on to tour the world playing on cruise ships, hotels and festivals. I returned to London to complete my master's in jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music, and during this time performed regularly at Ronnie Scotts, The Vortex and many other venues across the UK. I then spent two years in South America learning about salsa and Cuban music, while also working with British pop producers online and making content for a YouTube channel. I now mainly work as a transcriber, writing sheet music for all instruments including full Big Band scores. I have also worked extensively in musical theatre, most recently as musical director for 'Jersey Boys', and on the first US national tour of 'Summer: the Donna Summer Musical'. The video shown below is from my stint playing and directing 'After Midnight', a show set to the music of the Duke Ellington Big Band.

I teach online via Zoom, using software which allows you to see the exact keys I'm playing on my keyboard. My teaching method is to focus on whatever type of music the student loves most, and to build from there. I believe that many people give up their dream of playing an instrument simply because they aren't inspired enough, so my goal is to instil a love for music, whatever that means personally for each individual student. Everyone learns differently and has their own pace and rhythm. I have some students who like to have a regular weekly or biweekly lesson, and others who just get in touch once in a while when they have digested the previous lesson and feel ready to build on it. Whatever the case, I am very flexible and we can figure out what works best for you.

PLEASE NOTE: I am not currently available for in-person lessons

Find out more about John

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

Like many people, I didn't enjoy playing the piano when I was younger, and stopped altogether for several years. It wasn't until I discovered jazz at the age of 17 that realised music could be fun, and that I could play the music I liked. That's why I teach music in the way that I wish I had been taught, regardless of the genre.
  • Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I'm still not sick of the 1982 Herbie Hancock 'Quartet' album, featuring a 19-year-old Wynton Marsalis. That and anything by Jurassic 5.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I have often seen my students have a lightbulb moment when I explain to them how the songs they know and love are all related in very simple and logical ways. When I break down how to improvise, this can also be quite a revelation. With the right direction, even beginners can start improvising straight away.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

The Theorbo, because you can't even get it through a door. Google it.
  • What are your keys to success?

Find what you love. It doesn't need to be any more complicated than that. If you love the music, that's all the motivation you'll ever need. This is why I am always talking to my students about what they have been listening to, and what it is they like about it.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Bill Evans, J.S. Bach, Questlove. Imagine the banter!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

One of the most important things I've ever heard was during a masterclass with pianist Kenny Werner. Someone asked a question about how to deal with laziness. His response was: "you're not lazy, you're just overwhelmed".
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I often send YouTube clips to my students if I think they might like or learn from them, and make joint collaborative playlists so that we can share music back and forth. I also send personalised videos between lessons if the student needs something explaining.
