In my 5 years as a piano teacher, I’ve had the privilege of guiding over 5000 students through the exciting journey of musical development, blending technical discipline with artistic expression to help each learner find their unique voice on the instrument. My teaching focuses on core piano skills—finger independence, rhythmic accuracy, sight-reading, and hand coordination—while encouraging expressive playing through dynamics, phrasing, and tonal nuance. I weave music theory and improvisation into lessons to deepen understanding and inspire creative exploration. Tailoring lessons to individual goals and interests is fundamental, whether students are passionate about classical pieces, jazz improvisation, or contemporary music. For me, piano teaching is an ever-evolving art that centers on human connection. Every student is different—not just in their technical ability or learning pace, but in how they relate to sound, movement, and expression. That’s why my teaching approach is deeply individualized. I use careful observation and open dialogue to adjust lesson plans dynamically, ensuring that each session is responsive to the student’s needs and energy. I teach core skills like hand independence, rhythm, sight-reading, and articulation with care, but I also nurture emotional expression and musical storytelling.
I believe strongly in experiential learning—asking students to play a scale in different dynamics, feel the difference in touch, or interpret a short melody in multiple moods. These exercises help them build both technique and interpretive skill. I also guide students in setting realistic goals, creating structured but flexible practice schedules, and reflecting regularly on their progress. My students range from beginners to advanced players preparing for recitals, and I work across a variety of musical genres, always encouraging exploration.
A particularly impactful experience for me was helping a high school student arrange their favorite folk tune into a jazz-inspired piano solo. It was a stretch technically and creatively, but it led them to develop a newfound love for harmony and arranging. I aim for every student to feel a sense of progress and purpose, no matter how small the step. Piano lessons, in my view, are about building a sense of voice and possibility, and I strive to be the kind of teacher who listens deeply, adapts thoughtfully, and inspires genuinely.
