About Melany

Hey! It's nice to meet you, I'm so glad you clicked on my profile I'm very excited for you to get to know me a little more. I'm currently a sophmore in college majoring in Philosophy and Professional writing. I'd like to be a lawyer in the near future and work at the U.S. Attorneys Office in Lower Manhattan one day for the criminal division. I dream of one day being able to live and work in New York City, hopefully when the cost of living isn't through the roofs.

I enjoy watching anime and creating small diaramas of my favorite games, and movie sets as a hobbie. I also enjoy cooking and catching up with the news articles when I have the time. The Boston Globe ,NY & L.A.Times are my favorite right now.

Another thing I enjoy doing to pass the time is reading, my favorite books are American Panda, A Little Life, and Kokoro. I'm a huge fan of Japanese Literature and often find myself leaning more towards contemporary fiction and than non fiction.

About the class

I typically teach college prep for grades 9-12, but I have helped several middle school students who've wanted a head start in their college applications. I'm also open to teaching adults interested in pursuing a college career!

Here's a concise list of things I will go over:

-FASFA, Types of loans for college, cost & tuition breakdown, the importance of interest rates, majors vs minors, personal essays, extracurriculars, SAT and ACT, SAT Subject test, AP test, Honor classes, short response questions, types of colleges (Community & trade tech schools, state, public, and private universities), Eary and regular decision dates, binding vs no binding applications, emphasis schools such as liberal art schools, film schools, schools & tech school, letters of recommendation, interviews, types of college application portals, and what to look for in a school.

- I also like to talk about a school's location and the importance of making sure a school has a wide variety of resources and areas of academic interest.

In regards to my teaching methods, I've navigated mostly on zoom for tutoring. There have been a few cases in which I've met face to face in a library setting, but I've found that zoom is more
convenient for students. A typical lesson plan comes in the form of a google doc, each topic (ex. Federal student loans vs. Private loans vs. Institutional loans) has its own detailed document which is then organized on google drive so that a student can access it anytime they'd like after a lesson. In addition, I give small weekly quizzes to test their knowledge on the topic (In a week I tend to cover 1-20. I tend to leave little stars next to crucial information on a document as a hint of something being on a quiz.
