About Rory
Just a normal kid from the countryside in Suffolk, who attended a good state school (King Edward VI School, Bury St Edmunds) and who had brilliant teachers. A member of the 'gifted and talented' program at the school, I was being prepared for Russell-Group level academic study from a young age. I was part of a record number of students in our year group to receive full, 100% marks across all our AS-Level Politics exams (around 3 of us in total). However, when I first started university, I struggled. My old ways were not working anymore, and I had to learn a whole new approach to reach the level I needed. At school, I could rely on a few good teachers, but at university, I needed a process. It was an uncomfortable experience, with many life lessons, and what I learned and practiced in search of this process took me from barely passing my first year, to upper first-grade writing (marks of 85% and above) in my final year.
I attended the University of York from 2017-2021, graduating with a BA Philosophy (with honors) in 2021. I was a recipient of the 'York Award' and encouraged to stay with the department of Philosophy to continue my studies and specialize with them, although life had other plans!

Fun, light-hearted and unconventional approach to teaching. I will get you doing the thinking and articulating your thoughts clearly from day one. We will both read something in preparation for the session, and then we will see if we can figure out what the philosopher is trying to say! In doing so, we will be uncovering the philosopher in you too!
One of the most interesting parts of this process is discovering your own unique interpretation of a text, and then we begin to demonstrate your understanding to the examiner through your academic writing skills, which I will also work on with you. In order to do this, you need to be able to show that you understand what the philosopher is getting at. If this seems a bit ambiguous to you, don't worry! It will all become clear after a few sessions.
These skills are powerful, but take some time to develop. By working together, I will be able to walk you through the process that got me from low second-grade writing at university, to upper-first grade work which had the Philosophy department begging me to stay and specialize!
I always adapt every session to my student's specific needs and goals, whether you are preparing for A-level exams in the summer, or developing your formative or summative skills for your philosophy degree. GCSE students are also welcome if they would like to get ahead.
