Each participant in my class comes with their own paradigm of what chemistry is. Chemistry is a complex subject that can be taught using a myriad of different software to entice and enlighten a wide range of students. Each student views the subject matter differently however. My teaching style is intentionally broad to encompass each and every member of the class. Some students learn primarily through discussion, and some more effectively through visual mediums. My job is to blend a variety of software, with discussions, in order to reach each student and make the subject meaningful to them. The use of software presentations allows me to spend more class time with discussions to teach chemistry as opposed to writing the lecture on the board. I use this extra time to give reinforcement of topics (i.e. goals of the class, student progress and ‘real world” examples) and build relationships between my students and myself.
E-mail allows the student to obtain clarification of assignments and get additional explanations - 24 hours/day, 7 days /week. A syllabus and course description is given the student that shows the sequence of the lecture.
Perhaps the most common misconception that students have is that chemistry is simply a body of material that can be memorized. To a very limited degree this is true, but it makes the job of the student much harder in the long run. By simply memorizing the subject matter, the student does not learn the material; they simply store it for a short amount of time. Understanding how and why chemistry works is the key. When students understand the underlying principles, they no longer rely on memorization. They are no longer limited by the examples provided in class, but rather are enticed by them. They learn to apply the knowledge that they have garnered and transcend the act of mimicry.
The application of learned information is the goal, but in order to reach it, I must cultivate in my students interest in the subject matter. There exists a “big picture” that I attempt to share with them in order to stimulate their desire to learn. Gleaning information through memorization only affords a student small discrete facts, each independent of one another and therefore detached from the whole of chemistry. An understanding of how each atom, element, molecule, and reaction is integrated is necessary for the student to truly appreciate the complexity and beauty of the subject matter. A student cannot be expected to have an interest in a subject of which they have no practical understanding. It is my task as an educator to provide the students with “real world” examples of chemistry at work in their lives. I strive to make the subject interesting and poignant. I constantly call upon my years of experience in medically related fields and engineering to provide these examples. When a student is given an exciting and relevant example of chemistry taken from the everyday world that they can see or touch or take advantage of, it is much easier to influence and encourage their involvement in the class.
