I placed second nationally in my Maths GCSE and top of my school in Maths A-Level. I have previously worked as a Statistician for the University of Oxford, and have completed a PGCE to become a qualified maths teacher

ONLY REMAINING SLOTS SATURDAYS 09:00-10:00am AND SUNDAYS 11:00am-12:00pm. I believe that students are more capable than they often give themselves credit for. Under conditions/environment in which they feel most comfortable and supported, people are able to gain the confidence to wildly exceed the limitations they can feel from both themselves or others. I believe Maths to be a language we use to communicate numerical concepts. However, maths seems to be the only language where I often hear people describe themselves as “not smart enough” to get it. Even if a person doesn’t understand Spanish, they’re not likely to say they’re not smart enough to understand it, but instead often believe they could learn it with enough time and effort. This is the perspective I hope for my students to have with maths. I hope to take students and show them that they have what it takes to succeed in maths, even if they don't consider themselves a "maths person”. I like to teach through examples, providing well-defined steps to ensure that we can pinpoint what the student understands and where they are having difficulty. I often tell students that "Everything is difficult until you know how to do it". This is something I've experienced first-hand many times in my life; I believe something to be too difficult until I properly learn it/it has been properly taught. Upon reflection, I see how it wasn't so bad all along. This is the destination where I wish to help students get to, where they can look back on everything and realise it wasn't too difficult for them after all, they just needed some help along the way.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

    I have had an interest in mathematics for as long as I can remember; mathematics was always considered to be "my thing". I developed an interest in tutoring when I was still in secondary school, while my own learning was still ongoing. I was interested in the different ways in which people viewed the content and I wanted to help them see it the way I saw it.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

    I teach mathematics. My favourite topic to teach is Calculus, often referred to as the mathematics of change. Within Calculus, I enjoy explaining the concept of differentiation. I believe this is because I myself only began to truly understand the core concepts when I was already at university. I believe students have a right to have these concepts explained to them properly while they are still at school, to challenge them and also help them gain a more honest view of what mathematics truly is.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

    My role model in the world of teaching mathematics is an Australian Teacher/Youtuber named Eddie Woo. I encourage anyone, whether they have an interest in mathematics or not, to watch his lessons on YouTube. The best aspect of his teaching is that he is genuinely interested in what he is teaching, and is able to put himself in the mindset of someone who is learning mathematics for the first time, despite himself being an expert. Even having graduated with a Master's in Mathematics, I find myself learning new things from watching him teach high school.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    The most important quality to being a good tutor (or teacher) is empathy. It is essential to understand what it means to not understand. A good tutor must be able to put themselves in the shoes of someone who is absolutely bewildered by the content, and needs their understanding developed from the ground up. A good tutor must understand the material well enough to truly understand why someone else might not understand it.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

    I remember an end of year exam we had in maths where a question read "What 2 numbers multiply by themselves to give 25?" and provided 2 boxes to provided the 2 numbers. Almost everyone put the number 5 in both boxes, using the logic that 5x5=25. I was aware that the answer they wanted was 5 and -5, and put that as my answer. Other students thought I was some kind of genius for recognising that was the correct answer when, in reality, I had just happened to have seen an episode of The Simpsons where the exact same question was asked and answered. It made me think, we often think someone is a genius for knowing something we don't but, in reality, they just know it because they've been exposed to it before and we haven't, even if that exposure is something as trivial as having seen it in a cartoon.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

    My biggest difficulty in mathematics came from my first year at university, as most students had done Further Mathematics at school, whereas I hadn't as it wasn't available. As I mentioned in my answer to the previous question, I felt stupid because all of these people knew things which I didn't when, in reality, they only knew these things because they were presented with an opportunity which I wasn't, not because they were necessarily smarter than me.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

    My passion within teaching is definitely specific to mathematics. Mathematics is a way of thinking, and I enjoy challenging people to think differently about things. Teaching mathematics means teaching new ways to think. I also enjoy teaching mathematics because it means I get to help young people achieve a level of understanding in something they thought they might not be capable of. If they realise they can now understand something they thought they never would, this helps them realise that they have potential they may not have recognised yet.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

    I believe I'm a Superprof because I care. I remember and recognise all the difficulties associated with being a young person, especially in this day and age. In a world and system which can seem as confusing as it does difficult, I am honoured to provide these young people with even the smallest amount of help which might makes their lives that little bit easier.
