About James
I have tutored many students for schools and privately for the last 2 years whilst doing my undergraduate degree in Materials Science. I find tutoring really enjoyable, and hope to transfer my passion and curiosity for science on to the students I teach. It is really rewarding to watch students improve, both in knowledge and confidence. I feel my undergraduate degree in Materials Science taught me how to learn effectively, and essential problem-solving skills critical for all fields.
For background on me, I am currently starting a PhD in solar cell technology at the University of Oxford. I find this field really interesting because it is about how materials work on the atomic scale and how we can manipulate them to do cool things like produce electricity efficiently. At A level I did Chemistry, Physics, Maths and 3D design achieving 4 A*s. Outside of education I enjoy building things, music and I play the piano!

I generally like to focus on intuitive and visual understanding rather than memory-based learning as I feel this prepares most students best. In lessons, we also typically spend a lot of time working through problems, with you as the the student leading the discussion and me there as a guide to help develop techniques and methods for problem-solving. I am very happy to listen to how you prefer to learn, and adapt what we do in lessons to suit as I find that gives the best results. The main thing I ask from students is that they always talk through what they are thinking as then we can address any areas which misconceptions might arise from. I hope my tuition gives students the skills and confidence to broaden their thinking and problem solving skills above and beyond the curriculum to achieve the best grades possible.

James helped me through A level Chemistry. He skyrocketed my confidence by offering great explanations of topics I found complex and I went into my exams a lot more confident than I would have been without his tuition. He was very patient with me when I was confused and offered alternative explanations to solidify my knowledge. I would definitely recommend him to a friend.
