About The Math Instinct
Hi,
I’m Abid. I am an educator and a philosopher. My life has been a quest to understand how the world works and I seek to use this knowledge to live a better life.
I am a graduate (B.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (Batch of 2017). After graduating, I joined BYJU’S as a content creator for Mathematics.
I started my career working with the team creating K12 math content. Later, I went on to manage a team of more than 20 members who created math content for the Create With Math product – a live online learning program. I discovered the joy of teaching while conducting one-on-one online classes for Create With Math.
The past five years have been a long meditation for me about what good and effective education looks like. I realised that there is a large gap between what effective education could do and what our education delivers currently. I started coaching math with the intent to help more individuals reap the benefits of becoming confident independent learners with a special emphasis on Mathematics.

My coaching is designed to develop a deep understanding of math as well as building the skills necessary to do math. The coaching process involves the learner thinking through the ideas themselves with the guidance of the coach as well as practicing the skills required to do math. This process, over time, equips the learners with the foundational understanding and the ability to do math. The result is the transformation of learners into confident problem solvers.
My coaching process is based on three pillars – investigation, awareness and contextualization.
Investigative learning makes learners active participants in the learning process. By asking thought-provoking questions, learners are led to arrive at mathematical understanding by themselves. Through this method, learners become active explorers as opposed to passive consumers of knowledge. This process also develops the logical thinking skills of learners.
Awareness-based learning makes learners aware of their skill gaps as well as their learning process. Learners develop a keen awareness of specifically where they struggle in their learning. They also become aware of their limiting beliefs when it comes to learning. This awareness becomes the basis of their ongoing improvement.
Contextualized learning helps learners understand the real world applications of math as well as the situations in which it is necessary. They will also understand how ideas in math are interconnected and fit in with the broader whole of mathematics. This will help to ground their understanding of math.
