About Roderick
My name is Roderick, current student in Usyd. My family is multicultural where my mom is from China and my father is from Germany (I don't speak German cuz it's second marriage). Due to that, I always enjoyed learning new languages, cultures, and knowing people.
Honestly, becoming a full-time teacher is in my "Top 3 don't wanna do jobs in future" list. But when I was learning, I always wanted my teachers to take slightly different approaches. Maybe, a little more friendly, a little more fun, a little more tailored to what I needed.
So, that's why I'm here. I thought maybe I can help someone else to have some fun while learning something hard. Maybe another person's interest can be sparkled if I add what I felt was missing in my journey to this teaching.
I've lived in four different countries, interacted with diffrent people, cultures, and classes. No matter where are you from or what age are you, in my classes, I will try my best to accomodate to your hopes and opinions, not the other way around. And I will always treat you as a friend with respect!

If you want someone more of a friend than a teacher, who shares you interesting facts and genuine cultural insights, who you can discuss with about not only the language itself but more what's beyond, come try your first lesson!
I'm a native speaker with great standard accent due to my life experiences in both northern and southern part of China. Also my life experiences in U.S, Australia, and Canada trained me to be respectful to anyone. And with my other foreign lanauge learning experiences, I believe I can relate to your situations, understand them, and try to work on it together with you.
The general style of my classes should be chill, fun, and friendly. Thus, the course might not fit for those who want to push hard.
For Mandarin teaching, the philosophy is to bring the student into the Chinese way of thinking. As I had multiple experiences in learning languages, I believe the key to being fluent is to think in a way that flows with the language.
To do so, the student should be interested in the language in order to accomplish "spontaneous assignment". Interest-based assignments will be personalized to each student and fewer books will be used.
Students who learn to pass certain tests should carefully consider before choosing this course because contents and methods of this teaching usually don't align with standarized tests. However, skills such as speaking or listening should apply to all.
