I approach my topics by breaking them down into the simplest form to ensure everyone understands as best they can. This is done using a mix-methodology approach to ensure the method that best fits the students learning needs is implemented.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I started tutoring when I was in high school. The feeling of being able to help someone grasp a concept they once felt was impossible brought great satisfaction to me. Since then, I have continued tutoring throughout the years and never lost interest.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I have always had a love for the sciences, specifically Biology, Ecology and Marine related subjects. I feel as if though they are some of the most important concepts and topics out there. They help us understand ourselves and the world we live in every day. Having a passion for a subject makes it easier to teach and I believe this is one of the key components of being a great tutor.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had a chemistry teacher at my first stage in university. I remember hating chemistry after highschool because my previous teacher had only one approach to teaching the topic which did not suit me. Coming into university I honestly thought I would have had an awfully hard time getting through the subject until I met this lecturer. He taught the subject in ways I’ve never seen much teachers do. He would come to class with no textbooks, and no extra anything, just himself and a whiteboard marker. He would break every topic down and explain it in a manner which it related to our daily lives. Even if you did not want to understand, you would. Since then, I learnt that anything can be broken down and anyone can learn something if taught the right way.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    1. Patience
    2. Open mind
    3. Good problem-solving skills
    4. Friendly
    5. Approachable
    6. Empathetic
    7. Adaptable
    8. Good communication skills
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Everyone learns differently this I’m sure of, but as much as you learn to grasp concepts and ideas some things unfortunately you much memorize. I remember during my time at university we would have our study groups where we would help each other learn different subject areas that weren’t out strengths. If you are familiar with biology and marine biology terminology, there are a lot of scientific names that are often involved. During my taxonomy courses we were tasked with learning an entire family line of names. I remember us making acronyms, raps and songs for them. When the time came for the test I looked around at my study buddies and realized we were all bobbing and shaking around in the class to remember the songs and our teacher swore there was something wrong with us. Nevertheless, we all got an A on that test. The idea is that learning does not need to be a one mode method. Things can be done differently for everyone, doesn’t imply we are any ,mess intelligent or worthy, simply means We arrive to the final knowledge at a different time and in a different way; the end knowledge however, is the same.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The only difficulty I would say I have had with my subject is the facts that the topic is an everchanging one. The information is not final and new things are being discovered, disproven and achieved every day. The only challenge is keeping up and staying informed.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

As mentioned in my First answer, the passion is in the ability to help someone grasp a concept they one thought was unachievable.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I am a superprof because I put my all into ensuring my students get the help they need to learn through dedication, patience, creative and consistent aid.
