About Bernie
I am currently completing a PhD in Medical Physiology at Stellenbosch University and hold an MSc in Medical Physiology, with several years of experience in academic research and biomedical sciences.
I also have previous experience tutoring undergraduate Physiology to students across the health sciences, including medical faculty students studying fields such as Dietetics, Physiotherapy and Nursing. Through my postgraduate research, I have additionally gained experience mentoring and supporting Honours and MSc students.
I enjoy taking topics that initially seem complicated and breaking them down into something logical and manageable. What I particularly enjoy about teaching physiology and biology is helping students understand how different concepts connect, rather than relying purely on memorisation.
Having worked with students from different health-science programmes, I understand that the depth and focus of Physiology can differ depending on what a student is studying. I therefore adapt my approach to the student's course, current level of understanding and specific areas of difficulty.
I am approachable and patient, and my goal is for students to leave a lesson not only knowing the material better, but understanding it well enough to apply it independently.

My approach focuses on helping students understand the concepts behind biology and physiology rather than simply memorising facts. I adapt lessons to the individual student, first identifying where they are struggling and then working through the underlying concepts step by step before applying them to relevant questions and examples.
Lessons can be tailored to the student's needs, whether that means working through difficult course material, preparing for tests and exams, improving problem-solving skills, or strengthening their overall understanding of a subject.
As a Medical Physiology PhD candidate with experience mentoring university students in a research environment, I particularly enjoy explaining complex biological concepts in a clear and approachable way and connecting theory to real biological and physiological examples.
I offer lessons in English and Afrikaans and can assist learners from school-level Life Sciences through to undergraduate Biology and Physiology students.
