About Hugh
I am a UCD graduate with a First Class Honors degree in English and a Math degree (4.02/4.2, 96%). I have five years of experience tutoring Leaving Cert Math, Spanish, French and Irish, achieving H1s in all of these subjects myself. I currently teach piano at Greystones School of Music, where I have built a reputation for patient, effective and enjoyable lessons.
Beyond teaching, I am an active music composer and producer, which brings a creative and contemporary dimension to my piano lessons. Whether a student wants to learn classical repertoire, follow the RIAM grade scheme, or explore their own musical interests, I can draw on my compositional experience to make lessons engaging and personally relevant — including composing original pieces tailored to individual students.
I am passionate about helping students reach their potential — whether that means pushing for an H1 in Higher Level Math or simply building confidence in a subject they find difficult. Every student learns differently, and I pride myself on adapting my approach to suit the individual.
My lessons are structured, well-prepared and always focused on measurable progress. Students and parents can expect clear communication, reliability and a genuine commitment to results.

My approach is student-centered — I identify gaps early and tailor each session to the individual rather than following a rigid plan. For LC subjects, I focus heavily on exam technique alongside content: past paper practice, marking scheme awareness, and time management under pressure.
For Math, I break concepts down step by step, ensuring understanding before moving on — no memorizing without meaning. For languages (French, Spanish, Irish), I balance grammar, vocabulary and oral technique.
Lessons are typically 60 minutes.
For piano, I tailor each lesson to the student's goals. For those following the RIAM grade scheme, I guide them towards distinction by focusing on the most important elements. For students who prefer a more relaxed approach, I can suggest repertoire suited to their interests or compose pieces specifically for them.
Qualifications: Math degree (4.02/4.2, UCD), English First Class Honors (UCD), RIAM Grade 8 Piano, 5 years teaching experience across LC subjects, currently teaching Piano and Drums at Greystones School of Music.
Who it's for: Primarily Junior and Leaving Cert students (ages 12–18) for academic subjects, and piano students of all ages and levels, from complete beginners to Grade 8.
All lessons are available online via Zoom or Google Meet, with resources shared digitally before and after each session.
