About Shirou
When I was in my early years at school, I found learning difficult and my grades were average. At the end of my GCSE’s I told my chemistry teacher that it was my dream to be a Doctor. He laughed and said, “You will never be a doctor, no medical school will ever consider you”. The sad part is that my young, inexperienced and impressionable mind actually believed him. Instead, I applied to St George’s University of London to study Biomedical Sciences. After 3 amazing years full of many ups and downs, I graduated with a first class degree and simultaneously gained my place in medical school.
I often hear of teachers leaving young people with the impression that just because they may not be top of their class, that they cannot achieve what they want in life, and that they are not good enough. I am however a firm believer in the fact that there is no such thing as a bad student, only a bad teacher.
Feeling like you can’t pass exams should never be the reason you don’t get to where you want to be. The thing I have learnt is that if you want something bad enough no matter who tells you that you can’t do it, you can. If you are one of those people who like me struggled at the start to find their way then don’t panic, I am here to help and together we will let your success do the talking.

I have been teaching since the age of 17. I spent 2 years teaching physics GCSE alongside my A-Levels at my school. I focused specifically on students in the class who found the subject particularly difficult and worked individually with them to break down a given topic into it’s basic components and then use these foundations to build up a firm understanding of more challenging ideas. I also ran a science club for the year 7’s in my school. Every week we would meet and conduct simple but fun experiments following this I would spend half an hour explaining the science behind each experiment,
During the second year and final year of my degree, I applied to Lecture revision sessions to the younger years. I made my own lecture slides based on everything I had learnt during my first year including cardiovascular physiology and cellular and molecular biology. I then presented and taught them to the year below. This was the first time I had presented and taught such a large group of people. It was the most rewarding feeling to see students not only gaining a deep understanding in complex scientific concepts but also to see them becoming passionate about human biology.
In my opinion the key to learning is understanding. During my lessons, I like to begin by discussing a given topic with my students in order to build a solid foundation after which I like to use visual aids such as colourful diagrams and videos to build on our discussion. I then ask the student to explain what we have learnt back to me, firstly to reinforce what we have learnt but also to check that everything we have discussed makes sense. Finally, I like to address some sample questions with my students in order to apply our knowledge to actual problems. This is also essential in examination preparation. If a student has a specific preference or way of learning then I am more than happy to adapt to them and work with them to be the best student they can be.
My lesson time is typically 1 hour, however, I believe each and every student is different and have had many students benefit from shorter bursts of learning with 2x 30-40 minute lessons/week. It all depends on you and what your learning style and strengths are. This we will only gather with time.
