About Craig
I am presently teaching English 1101 courses at Gwinnett Technical College. I have 18 years of experience teaching 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grade and Postsecondary English including gifted, High Level Asperger’s students, and Move On When Ready courses in Literature and Writing at Johns Creek High School for two years through Georgia State University’s Perimeter College as well as at Central Gwinnett High School for Gwinnett Technical College. Since moving to Georgia in 2013, I have also taught Composition/Rhetoric in Hybrid and Distance Learning courses in the Technical College System and at University of North Georgia. I taught 11th grade English at Cedar Shoals High School in Athens in 2022-23. While teaching 11th grade American Literature and 12th grade British Literature at San Jacinto High School in California, I successfully supervised over 250 students in meeting High School Senior Project requirements in 2012 while mentoring seniors at risk of not graduating. I used Online Assessment Reporting Systems software (OARS++) to analyze test data in the design of 11th grade English curriculum pacing guides and lessons to improve the correlation of instruction with state standards testing guides and to prepare students for the PSAT/SAT. I also designed multimedia instructional products as well as district benchmark and summative assessments according to interdisciplinary goals for 11th and 12th grade English. At the outset of my assignment at San Jacinto High School, I designed and delivered an original course with instructional materials for a 9th grade Freshman Seminar in Reading as a component in a Small Learning Communities Federal grant. My graduate studies in English at California Baptist University, Riverside culminated in conference presentations and graduating first in my class, earning the Outstanding Graduate Student Award in 2005. A second graduate program in Education at Claremont Graduate University on an Excellence, Equity, and Integrity Fellowship Award in the Summer of 2005 centered on developing pedagogical approaches that expedite remediation of literacy shortfalls; I completed work on a Master's in Education in 2006 as well as on a California Single Subject Credential in English. I have a Georgia Single Subject Teaching Credential Level 5 in English; in addition, I passed the GACE 520 ELA with a score of 289/300.

For high school students, I remediate reading at any level below grade level through supervised oral decoding practice and vocabulary development using methods tied to your dominant learning modality. If you don’t know your dominant learning modality, I can help you discover it. I facilitate writing through creative writing and guidance in methods for the generation of ideas. I use Transformational-Generative grammar’s ten sentence patterns and slot boundaries to train students in the use of sentence pieces in both speaking and writing; this new strategy will teach you personal expression in grammatical structures without requiring knowledge of grammatical terminology; it will also equip you to proofread and edit your writing more thoroughly. I can also train you in the analysis and interpretation of both British and American literature of all periods using the current critical methods. For undergraduates, my approach involves rigorous Socratics (teaching through leading questions), practice in rhetorical logic in guided writing (including the process of essay writing and editing) and oral response, as well as online research methods and MLA formatting in a synthesis with mentoring and multimedia lesson plans designed to target all dominant learning modalities. If you don’t know your dominant learning modality, I can help you discover it. This interpersonal, dialogic emphasis fosters undergraduate academic skills that can be used across the general education curriculum.
