I start the student basing the it on the foundation of sound as the French language follows its parent Latin and knowing the pronunciation and spelling rules are a great help in learning the spellings etc. People from English backgrounds have a tendency to get confused as vocabulary in French and English is 50% the same. A lot of the grammar in French is based on keeping the sound "nice" and this can be very confusing. A good basic grammar foundation is the first prerequisite to do well in French
