About Michael

I am currently in the final year of my English Literature PhD studies at Edge Hill University, however I consider my thesis multi-disciplinary in nature and aspire to be a social historian. I write primarily on nineteenth-century newsprint and make of digital archives and other tools of the digital humanities as part of my research. My thesis is focused upon representations of the preternatural (specifically sea monsters) in nineteenth-century British and American papers with the aim of both refuting Max Weber's assertions of disenchantment and instead proposing a new source of evidence for re-enchantment theory, I also draw attention to how the press manipulates the use of these monstrous cultural images such as the Kraken, Mermaid and Sea Serpent in order to present covert ideologies and contemporary dynamics regarding sexuality, international politics, post-Darwinian fears and ableism to its audience.

While I certainly enjoy and remain enthusiastic for my own research, I also have found during my time as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Edge Hill that teaching in Higher Education is something for which I have a great deal of passion and find immediately rewarding as an experience. I have often been commended by my colleagues, my supervisors as well as my students for being an effective, affable, enthusiastic and caring tutor and have been consistently praised through student feedback for my approachability, attentiveness and good humour, both in teaching sessions and in pastoral duties.

I will first discuss with you what your needs and requirements are, what is your learning style and what you hope to achieve from our sessions, we will then build a plan together on how to reach this goal. You will control the rate of your own learning, but I will challenge you and encourage you to ever develop and hone your skills and confidence in demonstrating your abilities. I am also very happy to supervise long essays and dissertation topics, and have proven experience in consistently enabling my students to raise the quality of their work.

I am a flexible and broadly-skilled researcher and tutor, I delight in finding new avenues of knowledge and am enthusiastic in sharing this experience with others. I am a major advocate for inter-disciplinary approaches and thus have experience and knowledge of numerous humanities-based disciplines, as well as personal research interests. This flexibility and eagerness to learn makes me uniquely adapted to adjusting well to new roles and experiences, but I also believe this constitutes one of my major strengths as a tutor. I am excited by new opportunities to apply the ideas and theoretical frameworks of one discipline to another in order to push the boundaries of existing thought and I encourage this willingness to experiment and think independently among my students. There is nearly nothing that brings me as much joy as hearing the ideas of my students and rediscovering texts and subjects anew through their own unique perspectives. In this manner I consider the ability to motivate students a reciprocal experience, for while my own enthusiasm for the subject is crucial in inspiring them to study, I also believe that their excitement and creativity are invaluable for revitalizing my own drive to pursue my independent research.

I often create new and engaging tasks for my students in order to ensure they approach the learning outcome in a manner that is creative, encourages student ownership of their own learning experience and visualises the text or task in a manner that provides variety from the traditional textual analysis and discussion mode of seminars, lectures and workshops. For example, when teaching on Sappho for a level 4 class, I encouraged my students to use online redacting and translation tools to take texts that would be more familiar with the group and render them unrecognisable, then by sharing these documents amongst the group, they attempted to “re-create” the original text in a manner that resembles the efforts of translators and academics to piece together the few remaining fragments of Sappho’s work; allowing my students a deeper understanding of the process as desired by the session’s learning outcomes. Likewise for a class on Dante’s Inferno, I suggested that each student create their own version of Hell that reflected 21st Century values in order to demonstrate that Dante’s text, while ostensibly an map of the abyss, is also valuable as a map of Renaissance Florence’s moral and theological values, encouraging my students to view the texts of the module as historical sources as well as pillars of our literary canon. These exercises have been deemed successes in my department and have now been adopted by several of my colleagues who teach on these modules.

Throughout my working life I have worked exclusively with students either in, or hoping to enter Higher education. In my previous role as an Open Day advisor I successfully advised prospective students about university life and their preferred academic subject in a manner that both promoted the university as well as ensuring the potential students were making the right choice for their individual circumstances. In this role I would often discuss highly personal information with students and any guardians or concerned family members in attendance and ensured that I maintained a professional, approachable, and sensitive conduct that treated these unique concerns with the discretion, respect and nuance they deserved.
I have continued and expanded upon these advisory and pastoral roles as part of my teaching duties as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and have maintained close contact and provided ample support for my students through maintaining regular contact hours, ensuring quick responses to email enquiries, arranging support sessions for students that required either key skills being further developed or more interactive feedback on their assignments in order to improve their performance. I have also provided support and advice for students wishing to enter the academic field or wish to progress their studies in an MA or PhD scheme.
