About Issy
I’ve always been passionate about mathematics and the way it blends logical and creative thinking. I enjoy helping students discover the beauty and structure of maths while building their confidence and improving their results.
I hold a First-Class degree in Mathematics from the University of Manchester, undertaking a module in Mathematics education at University, I learned about educational theory. This deepened my understanding of how students learn, enabling me to boost my 8 current students in both their performance and enthusiasm for the subject.
I also have experience preparing students for the Perse entrance exam, including guiding them through the application process and supporting them in writing strong personal statements.

I take a student-centred approach to teaching; encouraging discussion, exploration, and active engagement rather than rote memorisation. My lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, pace, and preferred learning style. Generally, we build understanding through three key stages:
* Prior knowledge activation (Piaget's constructivism) - We begin by linking new concepts to what the student already knows, helping them build on existing mental frameworks. This process reinforces understanding and creates a strong foundation for integrating new ideas.
*Guided discovery (Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development) - I introduce new material through scaffolded support, guiding students to tackle problems slightly beyond their current level of independence. As their confidence and competence grow, I gradually withdraw assistance — promoting a deeper conceptual understanding.
*Reflection (Flavell’s Theory of Metacognitive Development) - Students are encouraged to evaluate their own understanding, identify areas of strength and difficulty, and articulate their problem-solving strategies. This self-assessment builds metacognitive awareness, enhances critical thinking, and empowers students to take ownership of their learning progress.
Lessons are typically 60 minutes, though this can be adjusted depending on the student’s needs. I teach Mathematics and Further Mathematics from Year 6 to Year 13, covering entrance exam preparation, GCSE, and A-Level courses (across all exam boards including Edexcel, AQA, OCR, and CIE).
Ultimately, my aim is not just to improve grades but to help students start to enjoy mathematics — to reach that moment when everything “clicks,” and problem-solving becomes satisfying and rewarding.
