About Nelson Sakaguchi
Currently, I study music therapy at FASM (Faculdade Santa Marcelina) and this has greatly expanded my view on the relationship we can have with music. In addition to entertainment and aesthetic appreciation, we have developed a social and affective bond with the musical art that says a lot about our personal history and identity. Thus, I have gone through moments of reflection on the traditional way of teaching music and realized how much it is geared towards a type of “professional” performance that is often emptied of critical sense (mainly in the matters of personal issues and the social roles of its objects of education). I decided, therefore, to change my perspectives of what I consider to be the purposes of music teaching and found a way to put the student at the center of the learning process (with the students motivations, feelings and thoughts) and build, with him/her, a pedagogical path that includes not only the performance, but also subjects of personal development (self-knowledge, self-esteem, etc.), critical thinking, among others. In view of this teaching perspective, I chose to work with a learning path that is built with the student and guided, within a period of one year, by annual, quarterly and monthly objectives. Having the protagonism of the student is essential to determine which path to take and, thus, we can talk about what steps are necessary to reach the desired ends.
For this, firstly, we design your profile that contains your motivations, characteristics, difficulties and needs. And from there we can elaborate the objectives of the year that are divided into quarterly and monthly objectives. None of them are strictly cast, giving the possibility to discuss and adjust them throughout the course. During the dialogue for the construction of the path, I will discuss the necessary technical conditions to be linked and to base the chosen objectives. Although, for beginners, some principles will be part of the process regardless of what the objectives are - they are, in the piano course: body posture (mainly of the hands and fingers) and movement of the hands and fingers (with a focus on the touch of the keyboard); and in the singing course: foundation for the better use of breathing, fonation and resonators / articulators. In this way, I believe it is possible to reconcile the studen's motivations and identities with the music education, without it being something desorderly or boring. And, thus, provide a path for discoveries, developments and challenges that bring something significant to it.

My name is Nelson Sakaguchi, I have a degree in music - qulified as a conductor - from UNESP (Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho) and I have been teaching private piano and singing lessons for more than seven years; in addition to conducting chorals for over four years. Besides the graduation provided by the college, I took the classical piano course at the Souza Lima conservatory with professor Miguel Laprano and had private singing lessons with Prof. Dr. Fábio Miguel. During my professional career, I worked with students of different ages (from 4 to 80 years old) and goals (recreation, performance, development of new skills, etc.), conducted the choirs “Acolhe Coral”, “Nossa Voz”, “Oficina do Tempo ” and “ Rejuvenescer” (each with its own particularities and purposes), and also, in 2014, I acted as“ Tin man ”in the musical“ The Wiz ”.
