About James
I hold a starred first-class degree in Music from Cambridge University and have worked as a professional singer at Norwich Cathedral and Magdalen College Oxford, as a pianist and organist for weddings and funerals, and as a teacher of piano and singing in schools, centres for young musicians, and in my own private business.
I began teaching even before taking my music degree, giving piano lessons to younger students in my school during my free periods as a sixth former. I have taught uninterruptedly since the age of seventeen and my teaching has informed my own practice and performance throughout that time - 'the best way to learn is to teach.'

As a piano and singing teacher, I aim to foster confident and independent music-making in my students so they can enjoy their music outside of lessons in whatever context that might be. To achieve this, I focus on good foundational technique, understanding of musical notation, and aural skills. Whether my student prefers to study the classical repertoire, jazz, pop or musical theatre, the skills we build allow them not only to learn a range of pieces in-lesson, but have the independence to pick up a piece of sheet music or hear a song on the radio and play it themselves under their own steam. Many of my pupils choose to pursue graded exams (ABRSM, Trinity), but many do not, wanting to learn simply for enjoyment at their own pace, and I am happy to work with students towards whatever their goals might be. I enjoy the unique challenges of teaching at all levels and ages, and I have the experience and resources to cater for all learning needs and goals. In my career I have taught complete beginners and 'post-grade 8' musicians and the age of my students has ranged from 5 years old to 74!
