About Derek

Unlock the world of mathematics and science with an experienced tutor dedicated to helping students excel on the SAT and ACT Math exams while also mastering the foundations, necessities for any STEM program. With more than a decade of tutoring experience, a Master’s in Electrical Engineering, and a Bachelor’s in Physics, I combine academic expertise with a true passion for teaching to guide students toward confidence and achievement.

My journey began with a love for the conceptual sciences. Physics introduced me to advanced mathematics, chemistry, and statistics, while engineering gave me a structured way to apply those principles in practice. Over the years, I discovered that mathematics and statistics are at the heart of nearly every academic and professional pursuit, and they have become central pillars of my teaching.

What sets me apart as a tutor?

Focused Expertise in Test Prep: I specialize in SAT Math and ACT Math, providing structured lesson plans, proven strategies, and practice that leads to higher scores.

Deep Knowledge of Statistics: From elementary statistics to advanced topics used in business, psychology, data science, and engineering, I equip students to handle statistical analysis with confidence.

Personalized Learning: Every student learns differently. I tailor lessons to your needs, making even complex concepts clear and approachable.

Flexible Options: I tutor full time, seven days a week, offering in-person sessions (homes, libraries, coffee shops like Starbucks) and online tutoring via Zoom, where screen sharing makes collaboration seamless.

Passion for Teaching: My enthusiasm for math and statistics goes beyond test prep—I want students to develop strong problem-solving skills and a lasting appreciation for STEM.

I chose tutoring as a full-time profession because I find deep satisfaction in helping others succeed. I’ve worked with high school students preparing for standardized exams, college students mastering statistics and physics, and adults advancing their careers through math proficiency. By focusing on SAT/ACT Math, Statistics, and core STEM subjects, I ensure every student builds both skill and confidence.

Whether your goal is to boost your test scores, strengthen your foundation in statistics, or succeed in advanced coursework, I am here to guide you every step of the way.

Physics I was a hurdle I feared, but Derek turned it into one of my strongest courses. His sessions were efficient, focused, and always connected theory to real problem-solving. With his help over the semester, I didn’t just pass — I excelled. For anyone serious about mastering tough subjects, Derek is the tutor to trust.

My daughter Anna struggled with math for years, but after working with Derek for a full year in pre-calculus, everything changed. His patience, clear explanations, and structured approach gave her confidence and mastery. Anna not only aced the class but also discovered a genuine interest in math. I couldn’t recommend Derek more highly.

I am currently a math major at CSULB. I have always done well in math. I love math. I am planning on getting my teaching credential in parallel. I recently transferred from Long Beach City. My final semester I had intro to Differential Equations. The professor was very hard making the class about operators and a lot of advanced math. This was the first math class I ever feared. Derek made it so easy. He made everything do clear and orderly.

I have worked with Derek's Tutoring Services for multiple semesters. I found him on Craigslist and first contacted him about General Chemistry 1. He advised me that he is an expert and designs his own classes. We met multiple times weekly through Chemistry. He also taught me from his specialized lessons and assigned hw. I Aced Chemistry and owe it all to him.

I am a nurse and Math and Statistics are my most dreaded subjects. I later had to pass Elementary Statistics online. Derek was there to assist with everything. We got an A in Statistics as well. WOW
