About Rory
Hi, I'm Rory, a final-year PhD researcher in Social Anthropology at the University of St Andrews. My research explores identity, culture, Indigenous rights, and reconciliation, drawing on extensive fieldwork conducted across northern Norway.
Alongside my PhD, I work as a university tutor and researcher on a range of projects focused on education, social inclusion, and community engagement. I hold a First-Class degree in International Relations and Social Anthropology and a Master's by Research from St Andrews.
I am passionate about helping students build confidence in their abilities and develop the skills needed to succeed independently. Whether you're preparing for exams, struggling with essay writing, applying to university, or working on a dissertation, my aim is to make learning engaging, accessible, and enjoyable.
Outside of academia, I enjoy travelling, hiking, music, and exploring different cultures and ways of life. I believe the humanities are at their best when they help us better understand both ourselves and the world around us, and I try to bring that enthusiasm into every lesson.

My approach to tutoring is participatory, flexible, and tailored to the individual student. Rather than simply lecturing, I like to use discussion, activities, exercises, and practical examples to help students engage with ideas and develop confidence in their own abilities. I believe people learn best when they are actively involved in the learning process, not just listening to information being presented.
At the same time, I recognise that every student learns differently. I therefore adapt my teaching style to suit individual learning needs, strengths, and goals. I have experience supporting students from a wide range of backgrounds, including neurodivergent students and students with autism, and I place a strong emphasis on creating a supportive and encouraging learning environment.
Lessons are typically one hour long, which I find strikes a good balance between maintaining engagement and allowing enough time to work through material in depth without becoming overwhelming. However, lesson length and structure can always be adapted depending on individual preferences and requirements.
Alongside my own private tutoring experience, I have taught and facilitated seminars for undergraduate students at the University of St Andrews, where I have supported students in developing critical thinking, academic writing, discussion, and analytical skills. I am currently completing a PhD in Social Anthropology at St Andrews and also hold a First-Class degree in International Relations and Social Anthropology, as well as a Master's by Research.
In addition to subject-specific teaching, I have extensive experience helping students improve their academic writing. Through my work as a university tutor, researcher, and proofreader for both the University of St Andrews and Nord University in Norway, I have supported students in developing stronger essays, dissertations, research projects, and written communication skills, scoring exceptionally high rates of student satisfaction. I am particularly experienced in helping students improve structure, argumentation, critical analysis, and academic English, including students for whom English is a second language.
I work with both secondary school and university students. At school level, I can provide support with essay writing, study skills, university applications, dissertation projects, and humanities subjects such as Modern Studies, Philosophy, and English. At university level, I specialise in Anthropology, Sociology, International Relations, Politics, Indigenous Studies, Feminist and Queer Theory, Research Methods and Ethics, Dissertation Support, and Academic Writing.
