About Scott

Is your child working hard but still not achieving the grades they are capable of?

Perhaps they understand the subject in lessons but struggle to apply their knowledge to unfamiliar exam questions. They may be losing marks through imprecise answers, weak exam technique or an inefficient approach to revision. Alternatively, they may already be performing well but need expert support to secure the A or A* required for Medicine, Dentistry or another competitive STEM degree.

This is where I can help.

I’m Dr Scott Dempsey, a professional science tutor with more than 12 years’ experience and a PhD from Durham University. I have worked with over 500 students from the UK and internationally, helping them improve their grades, develop confidence and prepare for entry to leading universities.

Last year, 100% of my university-applicant students secured a place at their first-choice university.

Who I work with

I particularly enjoy working with ambitious A-Level and GCSE students who are:

- Targeting an A or A* in Biology or Chemistry;
- Applying for Medicine, Earth/Neuroscience or another STEM degree;
- Struggling to turn subject knowledge into examination marks;
- Feeling overwhelmed by the amount of content they need to revise;
- Underperforming because of exam anxiety, poor organisation or inconsistent study habits; or
- Already achieving strong grades but looking for the final improvement needed for a competitive university offer.

I also support selected GCSE and IGCSE science and maths students who are aiming for grades 8–9 or preparing for A-Level study.

How tuition works

Our first session is used to identify exactly what is preventing the student from progressing. This may be a gap in subject knowledge, difficulty interpreting questions, weak mathematical skills, ineffective revision or an incomplete understanding of what examiners require.

I then create a focused tuition strategy around the student’s goals, current level and examination timetable.

Sessions may include:

- Clear explanations of difficult concepts;
- Targeted work on weaker topics;
- Examination questions and detailed answer analysis;
- Mark-scheme language and command words;
- Calculation and data-analysis skills;
- Revision planning and study organisation; and
- Strategies for improving confidence, accuracy and performance under pressure.

My aim is not simply to help students complete more questions. It is to help them understand why marks are being lost and develop a repeatable method for producing higher-quality answers.

Specialist subject support

My principal specialisms are:

- A-Level and AS-Level Biology;
- A-Level and AS-Level Chemistry;
- GCSE and IGCSE Biology, Chemistry, Physics & maths; and
- Earth Scienes at degree level.

I have detailed knowledge of the AQA, Edexcel and OCR specifications and tailor tuition to the student’s examination board.

For students applying to university, I can also provide guidance with course selection, personal statements, admissions preparation and the transition from A-Level study to a demanding STEM degree.

Resources and progress tracking

Every student receives access to a personalised online collection of resources developed over more than a decade of tutoring. Depending on their needs, this can include:

- Past-paper questions organised by topic;
- Mark schemes and examiner reports;
- Revision materials and recommended websites;
- Personalised study plans; and
- Progress-tracking documents that identify priority areas.

Students also receive a shared Google Drive folder, allowing us to exchange work and maintain momentum between lessons.

Lessons take place on a specialist online tutoring platform. The interactive whiteboard makes sessions active and engaging, and lessons can be saved, searched and replayed afterwards. This gives students a valuable revision resource and means important explanations are never lost.

Experience and credentials

I earned first-class honours in Geology before completing a fully funded PhD at Durham University. My wider academic experience includes study and training through Cambridge, Leicester, Royal Holloway and Wharton.

I have taught students from leading independent and international schools, including Eton College, Harrow School, Wycombe Abbey, Wellington College, Rugby School, St Paul’s School and North London Collegiate School.

I have also appeared as an invited panellist on the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme to discuss private tuition and was selected as a Top Tutor by Tutorfair.

Request an introductory conversation

If you are looking for occasional help with homework, I may not be the most appropriate tutor.

However, if you want structured, expert support from a science specialist who will be committed to helping you to achieve measurable progress I would be delighted to discuss your goals.

Send me a message with the student’s:

- Subject and examination board;
- Current and target grade;
- Year group;
- Main areas of difficulty; and
- Intended university course, if applicable.

I will then explain how I would approach their tuition and whether I believe we would be a good fit.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

    My passion for tutoring started while teaching undergraduates during my
    PhD at Durham between 2008 and 2012. I quickly discovered that I had a passion for teaching others and it was something that came naturally to me.
    Through travelling, I became fascinated with the Earth and how it worked. Particularly mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes and climate, so I decided to take a degree in Geology. My undergraduate degree provided me with an excellent understanding of all aspects of science, including palaeontology (biology), geochemistry and geophysics. Later I went on to specialise in geochemistry for my PhD, studying volcanoes from across SE Asia.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

    I teach 4 subjects in total. Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths at GCSE; and Biology, Chemistry and Physics at A-Level. My specialist subject is Chemistry, as that, is the one I’m most passionate about and studied at the highest level.

    I particularly enjoy teaching organic chemistry, as there is so much synergy between that and biology. For example, if you understand how certain organic compounds are formed and work you will develop a much greater understanding of biological systems; such as nutrition, hormones, genetics and respiration. I’ve found that often what you learn in one area of science can be applied in multiple other areas and gives you a greater depth of understanding.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

    Famous role models include the likes of Richard Feynman and Sigmund Freud. The former had an amazing ability to take complex topics and simplify them, which is not always an easy thing to do.

    The teacher who had the greatest influence on me personally was my geochemistry lecturer. He was an extremely extroverted and eccentric guy (who would often be kept away on open days), wore jesus sandals all year round and sported a huge beard. As intimidating as he was, you could tell the passion he had for what he was teaching. He explained concepts through stories and helped develop my love for geochemistry. I’m not sure I would have gone on to do a PhD had it not been for his influence.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    Being a great academic or teacher does not necessarily mean you’ll be a great tutor. A great tutor is also a coach and mentor to a student. Someone, who has the ability to empathise, inspire, set goals, and help organise a student to achieve their potential.

    Tutoring is an art and a science. There are proven strategies for helping students achieve great results, but these can differ based on the individual goals, personality, ability and skill level That’s why coaching is such an important addition to teaching. Every student is unique and discovering that uniqueness is the key to getting great results. I have supported my academic knowledge by training in the fields of coaching and psychometric assessments to become a better tutor.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

    At school, I was always told to follow my passion, which I believed to also be the thing which came more naturally to me. Back then, this was art. I could draw well. However, following A-Levels and a bunch of work experience days at graphic design companies, I realised that, this was not something that would directly translate into a career I wanted to pursue. Nor use much of the freehand drawing skills I had.

    Following a few gap years, I decided to go back and study a science degree, which required me to take A-Levels in Chemistry, Maths and Physics. Believing I was not as good at these subjects, it took a long time for me to gain confidence in them, but once I did, I was able to reach the highest of levels and achievements in them. This taught me a valuable lesson to not think of myself as ‘good’ or ‘bad’
    at something, but instead, focus on getting better at them over time. The creative side I naturally had as a kid is still very much being used every day in my tutoring.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

    In addition to my PhD, I earned a 1st class Masters's degree and an award for academic excellence. It didn’t come easy though. I was always more creative than analytical by nature. In fact, my first A levels were all in art-based subjects.

    In order to achieve the level I reached in science and maths, I had to discover strategies and techniques that worked well for me. That was the start of realising how important personal development and self-awareness are in education. I started tutoring and implementing this while at Durham and saw such great results that it became my profession.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

    I have multiple passions, such as sports and travelling. However, the one that complements my tutoring most, is psychometrics. I love to understand how people differ, particularly through their personalities and ability.

    I actually took a summer training course at Cambridge University to study Psychometric assessments under Professor John Rust (a leading expert in the field) and have BPS and EFPA certificates for Occupational Test Use (COTU), Ability and Personality, Psychometrics and Quantitative Psychology. If I use these with my students, they often prefer something a little more fun, such as the 16 personalities test, which can still provide valuable insights into things such as whether they are likely to be organised or not, or whether they are likely to need more help managing anxiety.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P )?

    For the following reasons in combination with each other, in no particular order:

    1. My record of achievement as a tutor (over 2,000 hours and 100 5* reviews on Tutorfair. Also voted as a top tutor on the platform in 2021)
    2. My academic record of achievement
    3. My experience of 10+ years as a tutor and academic coach
    4. My training in performance coaching and psychometric assessments
    5. My passion for what I do
    6. My understanding of technology and the most effective ways to deliver online lessons
    7. My vast resource library and knowing what resources to use for effective teaching
    8. My ability to organise, understand and empathise with my students, in addition to getting the best out of them
    9. My continuous personal development and desire to improve
    10. My relationship with my students and parents
