About Sheridan

I am a nature enthusiast, so much of what I have learned in doctoral studies (research in Iceland on a rapidly changing coast) and graduate studies (researching the erosion of 565 Ma fossils) is re-experienced where I am and in whatever I do. If I am out for a surf, I focus on the waves and the type of coast it is interacting with. If I am hiking on a trail, I take note of the vegetation, its diversity and how the forest interplays with the coast. Education is not just with pen, paper, and computers...it is in the whole world around us.

About the class

My lessons are experiential and contextual. Experiential, in that they offer a hands on element, preferably outdoors but also indoors through lab experiments and projects. Contextual in that I bind the content that you are learning with every day real life examples that are relevant to the student. The intentions of teaching and learning isn't just to see that the student completes the work, but that the student explores their own unique way of knowing the world, making it a much more exciting place to explore. I am not a Math tutor. My expertise is in theory.
An example of a lesson; would you like to learn about convection and advection? We build a fire in a Kelly Kettle, or better yet, make our own hobo-stove and build a fire and discuss the Laws of Energy.
I have over 10 years of experience in teaching and learning in the natural sciences with graduate studies in both social and natural sciences, thus my approach is holistic.
