About Bob
For over 20 years Bob and Kristi Charron have been teaching hand to hand, knife, swordplay and horseback combat based on translations of Medieval and Renaissance European manuals. They have presented and taught seminars throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia.
The instruction emphasizes scientific principles that guide the student's safe and efficient actions and can be applied to all martial arts. Our approach is self-defense focused, and includes the context of science and culture that produced the art.
Students meet twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in Stoughton, WI. The academy is also available for lectures, demonstrations and hands-on seminars for your school or event.

Watching students come to understand what is necessary in self-defense and how to manage their bodies relative to their opponent with the proper control of distance, time and place.
I graduated university with a Bachelors Degree in Education, so I've always been in the teaching profession, teaching High School Science and Adult Education. Prior to working with the historical sources, I spent 15 years in historical research and reenactment, continuing to teach history classes there. Once I discovered historical sources for personal self-defense and combat, it was natural that I would continue to pass on what I learned from them.
I have spent the last 20 years translating, learning with martial artists from all over the world, and teaching at national martial arts events and martial arts schools. I have been an invited instructor at events in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. I continue to be a regular instructor at the annual Combat Con in Las Vegas.

New students start their instruction in a beginners class, held prior to the main class session. Instruction begins with hand to hand with emphasis on understanding of principles, management of the body and working with control. Classes are conducted by the instructor with the help of senior students. Students are also welcome to remain and watch the main session to learn more by observation. Once the student shows a grasp of the basic work they will join the main class session.
I have worked with students from all backgrounds and experience levels. We only do physical work with adults or mature teens who are psychologically prepared to manage the responsibility of learning a martial art.
Safety first. Hand to hand combat and weapons work is potentially dangerous, and classroom control as well as a demand for each student to use control to avoid injury is vital.
Familiarity with the sources second. They should have worked thoroughly with a single source and understand it fully as a basis for their work. This is true of martial arts in general.
In the Spring of 2019 I was invited to teach at the Salle Saint-George in Seattle. The first night I gave a 2 hour presentation on Medieval Cosmology and principles of Mathematics with a significant questions and answer session afterwards. The next day I taught a martial arts class for the sword in one hand according to an early 15th century Italian master. This was very satisfying as I was able to combine the intellectual with the physical and apply the principles discussed the night before into the instruction for swordplay.
