About Rebecca
I'm an American, a New Yorker born and raised, but up until the pandemic I was studying theater in Moscow, Russia.
I arrived in Russia without knowing my way around the cyrilic alphabet. I had spent the months leading up to my trip obsessing over different language apps, youtube videos, online flashcard makers (you name it I tried it); all to no avail. It wasn't till I arrived in Russia that I was able to understand the language from a linguistic, but also cultural perspective. From there things clicked, and now I'm back in America speaking Russian!
Learning Russian can be easy, but apps like duolingo tend to actually make it harder to speak naturally and comfortably. I want to empower english speakers to take on learning a language that may seem more daunting than French, or Spanish.
I enjoy connecting with students and allowing them to surprise themselves with their knowledge!
I enjoyed the process of learning languages from an early age (I also speak french), but I only considered teaching when I was in Russia.
I was a TA for second year acting students at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York city. (The "fame" school).
I worked for the Kaufman Music center teaching children ages 7-13 basic musicality, ensemble building and theater practice.
I studied Russian in college, and was a student at the Moscow Art Theater School in Moscow, Russia for 4 months.

First off, I like to get to know my student.
What form of media do they most enjoy? (Books, TV, movies, silly youtube videos, tik toks, etc.) This is a great way for me to find supplemental Russian media they'll actually enjoy consuming!
Then, I like to get a sense of WHY they want to learn Russian. That means answering two things:
What prior knowledge is the student bringing to our sessions? (non nessescary)
What are their goals for our time together?
This information allows me to create a unique lessson plan that addresses my pupils goals, and interests.
The lesson plan will be a mix of language building exercises, and supplemental media (a silly soviet musical comedy for them to watch, a twitter account that posts its tweets in cyrilic, a russian youtuber obsessed with fortnite).
I enjoy doing it this way because the best way to learn a language (particularly Russian) is through through its cultural lense. This allows studnets to engage with Russian in an active way, and enjoy the fruits of their labor through Russian literature, movies, and TV!
