About Rebecca

As a writer, editor and translator, I know the ins and outs of language.

I have 5 years’ editing experience, ranging from second-grade biographies and creative writing assignments, to high school and college papers, to a master’s thesis. I also am a reporter and academic writer, with my work having been published in the Baltimore Sun, The Nation, The Frederick News-Post and the Massachusetts Daily Collegian. My translations have been featured in The Frederick News-Post and the Massachusetts Daily Collegian.

Additionally, I have 2.5 years’ experience as an America Reads tutor for a second grade class, with a specialty in writing and vocabulary.

I also have proficiency in Spanish, with limited proficiency in Portuguese, Chinese and French.

Growing up, my parents always took my brother and I to museums, allowed us to read the books we wanted and answered every question we had. I was also tutored in many subjects, including pre-calculus and essay writing. As an adult, I not only have a passion for learning, but I am also empowered. As a self-advocate, knowing how to obtain knowledge is my most important tool. I want to make sure that every child grows up confident in themselves and sees learning as a fun challenge, versus a chore.

This May, I will be obtaining a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and journalism, with a minor in Chinese and a certificate in translation and interpreting studies.

About the class

First, I ask them what they’re interested in. A favorite book, or TV show. Who their favorite character or celebrity is. Then, I ask why. Learning is all about engagement, so as a tutor, I need to know exactly what enthrall the student and how to pique their interest.

I also share a little bit about myself, including what I love to learn about and how I’ve overcome a challenge in my learning.

I have worked primarily with second graders, but also have experience with K, 1, 3-5.

I have also worked with high schoolers and college students.

Ask the prospective tutor why they love what they do. If they don’t have a reason, then they might not be the most passionate about the subject.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. What goals do I have? Have at least one goal that you’d like to accomplish, such as learning 20 new words or writing their first page-long story.

2. Am I ok with change? Be ready for the tutor to change the lessons, depending on whether you speed through a topic, or need a bit more time to really get a grasp on it.
