About Jonathan
Jonathan Galvan is a professional musician residing in Houston, TX. Jonathan has studied music for over 20 years and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education (Grades Kindergarten - 12) from Houston Baptist University. Jonathan's primary instruments of study are Bass Guitar, Tuba, Trombone, Euphonium, and Upright Bass.
As part of his degree requirements, Jonathan also developed proficiency on piano and all brass, woodwind and percussion instruments and can teach lessons in each.
Jonathan has been teaching private lessons for 7 years, including 1 year of teaching as an instructor for Guitar Center. Mr. Galvan was promoted to Lessons Department Manager for Guitar Center and served in this position for 6 months before ultimately parting ways with the company to focus on his music performance career and independent private lessons.
Jonathan is deeply motivated by a strong passion for music and loves to help others discover their own musical abilities. Studying music has countless benefits for the learner beyond just learning to play an instrument. Growth in creativity, self-confidence, self-discipline, focus, self-expression, teamwork and maturity are just some of the positive impacts one can expect when studying music.
Jonathan carefully plans each and every lesson for each student, making sure to tailor and adjust to suit the needs, goals, desires, and learning style of each.
Above all else, Mr. Galvan makes sure that the student will enjoy their time studying music and have a fun time in lessons with him!
Private teaching was a natural progression of my own musical study. I have always loved helping others in any way I can. I can't think of a better way of doing that then through the gift of musical education.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Houston Baptist University. I studied all through grade school as well and have taken numerous private lessons of my own with world class professionals.

The first lesson with a new student is always exciting. I usually begin with a brief 5-10 minute conversation to get to know the student and their goals, desires, and past musical background. I do not count this time towards the lesson. From there the lesson will usually operate in a standard fashion, beginning with skill appropriate warm-ups/exercises and then moving to selecting the student' first song of study.
I have worked with a wide variety of students both privately and in classroom settings ranging from kindergarten and special needs all the way up to 12th grade, college bound students. I have also taught adults of all ages and skill levels from young 20s to late 60s.
Don't assume that anyone who knows how to play an instrument knows how to teach. Many people try to teach to make money but never invest in learning how to properly teach. With my degree in Music Education, I have learned many techniques, approaches, and skills that help me craft the most productive, uplifting, and motivating lessons possible.
As part of my degree requirement I was a student teacher at Parker Elementary School for 9 weeks. Towards the end of my stay there, one of my students brought me a letter during my conference period. In another class he was in he was instructed to write about his favorite teacher and he chose to wrote about me! He spoke of how much he loved learning from me during band class as well as in our private lessons and how much he felt he had grown as a musician!
This has held a fond place in my heart ever since.

Details
Depending on what instrument of study, lesson prices are as follows:
30 minute lessons: $20-30
60 minute lessons: $50-60
Travel charge of $5 is added on for students who are more than 30 mins in travel time away from me.
