About Emily
Do you enjoy the music of The Beatles? Do you want to play electric guitar like Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton? Do you find something inexplicably alleuring about the music of the 1960s?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you have come to the right place! I am an electric bass/guitar player of about 10 years with plenty of experience playing in academic jazz bands, as well as my own side projects. My lessons offer plenty of useful advice for beginners looking to get into these instruments, as well as experienced players looking for specific techniques to evoke the trippier side of electric instrumentation.

I've been playing bass since I was 13, and through all of high school and college I played in Academic Jazz Bands. During college, I conducted my own rock band and arranged our own free venues. I graduated from Ohio Wesleyan in 2019 with a minor in academic music.

#1 Getting a sense for the student's proficiency, and more importantly, what they are looking to get out of lessons with me
#2 Fundamentals. Learning a basic introduction to music theory applies to all forms of instrumental music, but make no mistake, I am not training classical players. I am interested in teaching students music theory as it applies to them/as they will find useful. Every student is unique in this sense and requires careful planning.
#3 Improvisation/Composition. Once a student has demonstrated a solid understanding of the kind of basic theory our lessons involve, as well as an introductory level of proficiency, our lessons will turn towards skills relating to improvisation over simple chord progressions. From there, the door to the student writing their own progressions, melodies, and arrangements is wide open. Of course, every student is unique in what they are looking to get out of lessons. But it is my belief that these skills, through dedicated practice, can be learned by anyone, and it is my intention to impart those skills wherever I can.
Plenty of close friends over the years looked to me for advice playing guitar, and I have made plenty of time to teach them what I can. However, it is my firm belief that regular lessons will yield more concrete results than mere jam sessions.
When you listen to your favorite music, and you think "wow! this player is amazing, I would give anything to play like them" know that the feeling you hold is *exactly* what you need to achieve that, and that the success you envision is well within reach through regular practice, whoever you chose to take lessons with.
