About Paul
My lessons are tailered for each individual student. Becasue each student has different needs I consult with each student to determine the best course of action for thier learning. My students have a large stake in determining what is best for their wants and needs.
I enjoy watching students grow and prosper in music. It is very satisfying to bring musical expression in the lives of my students. I have degrees in music theory and music education. I have over 40 years experience performing solo and in just about every type of musical ensemble you can imagine. I also have 30 years experience teaching, including 20 years in the public schools. This combination of education and experience gives me great insight into how best to help people learn to make thier own music!
I come from a family of teachers tha inspired me to become a teacher. I began teaching at a music studio called Polly Pandy Music Studio that employed 5 teachers giving private lessons. I was a professional performing musician at the time. During this time I returned to college to complete my degree then completed the requirements for teacher education. That's when a mentor of mine was looking for a guitar teacher and recruted me for the job. I recently retired after 20 in the public schools. Along the way I earned a MA in music education.
I have a BA in applied music composition and theory and a MA in music education. That, in addition to 30 years as professional teacher and 20 years in the public schools relate strongly to my dedication to music and to teaching.

Depending on the age of the student, we will work together to create a plan for learning. I will try to get to know what the student sees as the outcome of the lessons. Then we will talk about finding the best method for achieving those outcomes. For younger students, parents should be invoved in the the process.
In my public school job I have worked with the usual wide variety of students that you find in a public school setting. The location of my job is important. I work in New Mexico only 30 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. We bus many students from Mexico and from the US side of the border to our school. I have successfully worked with many Spanish speakers even thought my Spanish is halting at best. My job has given me experience in mariachi music. I have also taught adult students and professional musicians. As a private and public school teacher I have worked with students ages 5-80 teaching guitar, piano, music theory, and songwriting.
Look for a teacher that is flexable enough to help you find the best curriculum for your needs. Also look for someone with the experience and credentials to back up their work. I am able to help students with guitar, piano, music theory, and songwriting.
Shortly before covid my students, grades 7-12, presented a guitar ensemble concert featuring 4 different guitar ensembles. I had an exceptional student that year who was senior and had been in my program for 6 years. The top group that he was in gave a spectacular performance that had the crowd dancing the aisles. It was a joyful event.

Perfect! Paul is very patient and understanding. I knew practically nothing about the guitar, but he explains everything slowly and carefully so that I understand and never makes me feel stupid for being so ignorant lol. I look forward to my weekly lesson. Learning to play the guitar has been improving my life as it relaxes me and it's rewarding to learn a new skill.

Details
The standard price for online lessons is $50 an hour or $30 for a half hour lesson. The standard price for in person lessons is $40 an hour or $25 for half an hour.
