About Ken
I have specialized in marching percussion lessons and instruction since 2005. With marching experience in both division 1 Drum Corps and World Class indoor percussion ensembles, I've been exposed to many different schools of thought and techniques which makes me an effective instructor to many different types of student.
Since 2007, I've held multiple roles throughout various high school percussion programs including battery coordinator, battery arranger, tenor/snare/bass tech, visual tech, and battery consultant.
Seeing progress! I've worked with students of all skill levels and watching them grasp a new idea or concept is why I do this outside of my day job. I love watching the gears turn and light bulbs start to flash as a student starts to "get it". Passing down the knowledge that was given to me by previous generations of percussionists is the lifeblood that makes it all worth it. Plus drumming is fun!
My real-world marching experience is my biggest advantage when teaching. As an alumni of several world class ensembles including Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps (San Antonio, TX), Constitution Percussion (Raleigh, NC), and Odyssey Percussion (Atlanta, GA), I have been exposed to many different teaching styles which makes me effective for a wide variety of students.

We start from the very beginning first by defining the student's goals and assessing their current understanding of fundamental technique, regardless of skill level. I am a huge advocate for fundamentals, especially in marching percussion, as it is the building blocks of any other rudiment. Proper fundamental technique is crucial for not only sound quality and the visual element to marching percussion, but also for dynamic expression when performing the music. A good understanding of fundamental technique will directly transfer to any other percussive instrument or realme of music performance!
Once we establish a firm handle on fundamental rudiments and technique, we steadily push forward by introducing more complex rhythms and challenging tempos catered to each student's unique situation and future goals. I often use actual drum corps exercises when practicing as this is the best preparation for any audition situation including high school, college, etc.
