Biography: Xander Crook—son of an ethnomusicologist—grew up in Florida and began learning percussion from Brazilian and West African musicians early in his life. In high school he played snare drum in his school’s African American-style drum line and upon graduation traveled to Guinea to study balafon with master artist Abou Sylla and then to Brazil to learn percussion with Jorge Martins, Adelson Silva, and Jose Cunha Mourão. Xander then majored in drum set performance and electronic music production and design at Berklee College of Music studying under drum set masters Terri Lyne Carrington, Neal Smith, Mark Walker, Bertram Lehman, and music production with Michael Bierylo and Richard Boulanger. Xander has been active in Florida’s hip hop and R&B communities, producing, band leading, and performing with many artists including his own groups MSNRA and Masune.
Performance Credits:
Among Many others, Xander has played and performed with Ulisses Rocha, Amo Soumah, Abou Sylla, Antonio Adolfo, Cesar Camargo Mariano, Jovino Santos Neto, Jorge Continentino, Rafael Pondé, Renato Martins, and Sebastian Notini. He has also won awards playing with groups El Frente (2010 Boston Music Awards Best Latin Band winner) and Maca Reggae-Samba (2016 Brazilian Press Awards Best Band winner)
I recieved my Bachelors in Music performance (graduated class of 2012) from Berklee College of Music in Boston. I also have been an adjunct at the University of Florida and have been a professor at the Brazilian Music Institute for 3 years in a row.
My education in Music began at an early age learning from my father.

I deal with a lot of students from a wide spectrum of skill levels. I have a number of excersizes that i like to give my new students to assess where they are at. I also like to talk to new students about what their goals are, what kind of music they are interested in pursuing, and how much time they have to commit to practicing. For beginner students i start them with two things, one being rudimental excersizes focused on specific problems with technique, and rhythmic ear training, connecting what you hear to what you play.
